Abstract

A novel replaceable low yield point steel coupling beam with corrugated web and demountable connection is proposed for establishing a rapid recoverable system of bridge piers or shear walls. Six specimens using different material and shape of the webs, with different height-tospan ratio, were prepared and tested under cyclic loading as per AISC 341-16. Three kinds of failure modes were observed, such as local bucking at flanges, welding fracture at the flange-to-endplate connection, combined welding fracture at the flange-to-endplate connection and shear bucking at corrugated web. The utilization of a small height-to-span ratio and low yield point steel in the web can enhance the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of proposed steel coupling beam. All the findings from present investigation may provide reference for the application of proposed replaceable low yield point steel coupling beam with corrugated web for bridges and buldings.
