Abstract
This study explores the socio-economic and economic effects of the Ukrainian refugee crisis on a number of member states of the European Union as well as the refugees themselves. Using a mixed-methods approach incorporating primary and secondary data, the study aims to identify the socio-economic challenges faced by migrants, evaluate the effectiveness of European integration policies, and reveal insights about the economic impacts on host countries, combining quantitative analysis of Eurostat, IMF, and Kiel Institute data with qualitative insights from the conducted survey of Ukrainian refugees. This study identifies significant barriers to the smooth integration of Ukrainian refugees into host economies, despite the potential benefits their inclusion may offer. It carries out an extensive comparative study of policy reactions throughout Europe, revealing notable differences in integration strategies' efficiency. The results highlight the necessity of specific policy changes to facilitate refugees' integration and more fully utilize their economic potential. Based on these findings, the thesis discusses targeted policy changes meant to maximize Ukrainian refugees' access to the labour market and socioeconomic integration. These policy suggestions aim to remove particular integration obstacles found in the analysis, like difficulties recognizing credentials and learning a language. This targeted approach aims to enable more efficient use of refugees' economic potential by offering a framework that can be customized to various European contexts to improve policy implementation and results.
