Abstract
The thesis including the written part and the Visual Project investigates the questions of the invented and real spaces, focusing on the small city as a unique cultural environment and exploring the interrelations between the stranger and unfamiliar surroundings. Basing on the concept of a small city, I connect my own experience with examples from the movies,videos,documentaries. Collaborative Visual Project and the written part of the thesis together answer the questions that interest me. In the thesis I define the position of a stranger and experience of being an «other». Documentaries, movies and videos that depict the city space from different aspects support my views on the experience of being a stranger. I combined examples of different genres for the written part: movies, installations, documentaries to show the versatile answers for the study question. Experimental documentaries created the narrative and an ambiance. Kabakov’s installations show how the personal involvement merges with the question of being a stranger. Movies analyze and create visual descriptions of the small cities. The combination of the Russian and Finnish movies invent a dialogue as well and new perspective on the question of the space.Description
