Abstract

Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena on suunnitella pohjoismaista taidetta esittelevä taidekeskus Espoon Karhusaareen. Työ on laadittu tutkielmana Eero Vuohulalle ja Tuula Karjalaiselle. Suunnitelman tavoitteena on edesauttaa Karhusaaren alueen kehittämistä. Diplomityön tarkoituksena on toimia puheenvuorona pohjoismaisen taidekeskuksen tarpeellisuudesta Karhusaaren alueen kehittämisestä kulttuuritoimijoiden käyttöön. Diplomityö alkaa historiaosalla, jossa kerrotaan Karhusaaren historian eri vaiheista osana Otaniemen kartanon tiluksia, Krimin sodan ajalta, Sinebrychoffin perheen kesähuvilana sekä Espoon kaupungin ulkoilualueena. Karhusaaren historialliset vaiheet muodostavat pohjan alueen historialliselle kontekstille. Seuravaassa kappaleessa esitellään suunnittelualue. Kappaleessa esitellään alueen yleispiirteet sekä lähialueen rakennukset ja maisemalliset ominaisuudet. Karhusaaren nykytilanteen jälkeen esitellään aiemmin laadittuja tulevaisuuden suunnitelmia Karhusaareen ja Karhusaaren kehitykseen keskittyneitä organisaatioita. Kappaleessa esitellään myös pohjoismaisen taidekeskuksen hankkeen käynnistyminen. Seuraavaksi tutustutaan esimerkkikohteisiin, jotka tarjoavat vertailukohtia Karhusaaren pohjoismaisen taidekeskuksen suunnitteluun. Esimerkkikohteina on neljä eri pohjoismaista taidemuseota tai galleriaa. Esimerkkikohteita ja Karhusaareen suunniteltua pohjoismaista taidekeskusta yhdistää lisärakentaminen kulttuurihistoriallisesti merkittävään ja luonnonkauniiseen ympäristöön. Esimerkkikohteet ovat toteutuneita esikuvia sille, mitä moderni taidekeskus sisältää. Kohteet antavat myös ideoita sille, kuinka pohjoismaisen taidekeskuksen voisi sijoittaa Karhusaaren arvokasta ympäristöä kunnioittaen. Analyysin ja referenssikohteiden tarkastelun pohjalta on laadittu suunnitelma Karhusaareen sijoittuvasta taidekeskuksesta. Suunnitteluosiossa esitellään arkkitehtoniset inspiraation lähteet ja kolme erilaista konseptiratkaisua taidekeskuksen sijoittamiseksi Karhusaareen. Vaihtoehtojen vertailun jälkeen työssä valittiin yksi vaihtoehdoista jatkosuunnitteluun. Suunnitelma esitetään piirrustuksina ja näkymäkuvina. Työn lopussa reflektoidaan työn prosessia ja lopputulosta.

The purpose of this master’s thesis is to envision the placement of an art museum displaying Nordic art to Karhusaari, Espoo. The thesis has been prepared as an independent study for Eero Vuohula and Tuula Karjalainen, whose goal is to promote the development of Karhusaari area for use by cultural actors. The thesis begins with a short but yet comprehensive section about the various phases of Karhusaari’s history as part of the Otaniemi manor, during the Crimean war era, as a summer villa for Sinebrychoff family and as a recreational area for City of Espoo. These historical phases form the foundation for the understanding of the historical context of the area. The next chapter presents the planning area and the pysical context of the envisioned art center. This chapter includes overview of City of Espoo, Karhusaari area and analysis of the nearby buildings and landscape features. Following the Karhusaari’s current state is a chapter presenting the future visions for Karhusaari and organisations interested in the direction that the area is developed. This chapter also discusses the emergence of Nordic Art Center project. Next chapter explores case studies. The case studies consists of four art museums or galleries from four different Nordic countries. These examples, like the envisioned Nordic Art Center to Karhusaari have new construction situated in historically and scenically significant environments. These case studies provide a realized example of what the Nordic Art Center could be like and how it could be situated to Karhusaari in a way that respects the area and without being overshadowed by it. The chapter following the case studies presents the sources of architectural inspiration and alternative conseptual options for the art centers design. Finally the focus shifts to the actual design plan of the Nordic Art Center for Karhusaari. The aim of the thesis is to serve as an argument for the necessity of a Nordic Art Center in Karhusaari and for the development of the area for cultural purposes.
