Abstract

The rise of cloud computing has upgraded traditional video surveillance systems into scalable and flexible service known also as Video Surveillance as a Service. This thesis analyses the pricing strategies and models applied to SaaS and how they can be used for Video Surveillance as a Service. Focus is put on, how video surveillance characteristics influence pricing decisions. Despite the vast amount of literature available about Software as a Service, there remains a lack of research related to Video Surveillance as a Service and especially the pricing of it. The study is conducted as a literature review, combining findings from academic research and case studies on SaaS pricing, characteristics of Video Surveillance as a Service and factors affecting pricing of these services. The research identifies commonly used SaaS pricing models, such as flat-rate, tiered and feature-based, and tries to find answer for which model would fit the needs of Video Surveillance as a Service most effectively. The literature review reveals that hybrid pricing models, which often combine device-based fixed fees with variable fees for storage or analytics, are currently most used in the field. However, suggestions are made in the conclusions that service providers should prioritize either hybrid or feature based models to combine profitability for the provider and value for the customer. This thesis contributes to both academic community and industry practice by identifying efficient Video Surveillance as a Service pricing tactics and options. Especially, it can help service provider to optimize their pricing approaches by combining profitability and value for the customer. Studies that focus on profitability of existing models and value for customer, are identified as possible future research options.
