Itä-Pasila – ideologioista toteutukseen ja nykytilaan. Modernin rakennusperinnön arvottaminen ja suojelu.

Abstract

Tämä diplomityö käsittelee Itä-Pasilan historiaa, identiteettiä, alueeseen liittyviä arvoasetelmia sekä sitä, millaisena alue näyttäytyy suojelun näkökulmasta. Työssä tarkastellaan 1970-luvulla rakennetun alueen toteutumisen taustalla olleita lähtökohtia, suunnittelun ideologioita ja sitä, miten toteutus on vastannut näihin pyrkimyksiin.

Sodanjälkeisen yhteiskunnan rakennemuutos on yksi 1960–1970-luvun olosuhteisiin merkittävästi vaikuttaneista tekijöistä. Kaupungistumisen aiheuttama valtava asuntotuotannon tarve, teollisuuden uudet keinot ja toisaalta myös aiempien asuinalueiden rakentamiseen liittyvä kritiikki vaikuttivat kaikki osaltaan rakentamisen tavan – ja siten myös kaupunkikuvan – muutokseen.

Työssä pohditaan, millainen osa ajankuvalla ja näkökulmalla on tulkintaan alueesta ja sen arvoista. Alueen suunnittelua ohjanneissa, tehokkuuteen liittyvissä päämäärissä voidaan nähdä yhtymäkohtia myös nykypäivän kaupunkisuunnittelun tavoitteisiin.

Diplomityössä todetaan modernin, ja erityisesti 1960–1970-lukujen rakennusperinnön olevan uhattuna, pitkälti arvostuksen puutteen vuoksi. Työssä todetaan betonisten lähiöiden kertovan kuitenkin jotakin hyvin olennaista ajastaan. Ne ovat historiallisesti ja kulttuurisesti kiinnostavia, merkittäviä alueita. Niiden arvot kehittyvät ja saattavat tulevaisuudessa näyttäytyä yhä vahvemmin.

Diplomityössä käsitellään modernin rakennusperinnön arvottamiseen ja suojeluun liittyviä näkökohtia ja tarkastellaan millaisia arvoja esimerkiksi Itä-Pasilassa on modernin rakennusperinnön edustajana. Alue on oman aikansa ilmentymä, jonka alkuperäiset intentiot – niin toiminnalliset, sosiaaliset kuin materiaaliset ideat – näyttäytyvät niin suunnitelmien taustalla kuin olemassa olevassa kaupunkikuvassakin.

Keskeisenä päätelmänä työssä todetaan, että alueella on monia arvoja. Autenttisuus on eräs Itä-Pasilan arvoista: paikan ominaispiirteet ovat ajastaan riippumatta olemassa, joskin näkökulmat ja suhtautumistavat niihin ovat vaihdelleet ajan saatossa. Alue on toki elänyt ajassa, saanut uusia merkityksiä ja se sisältää ajallisia kerrostumia. Tulevaisuudessa Itä-Pasilasta voi nousta esiin myös täysin uusia arvoja. Aluekokonaisuus on elävä esimerkki kompaktikaupungin ajatuksesta. Se kertoo tarinaa aikansa kuvasta, ja muistuttaa aikojen saatossa ympräristössä, yhteiskunnassa ja kulttuurissa tapahtuvasta, vääjäämättömästä muutoksesta.

This master’s thesis examines the history of Itä-Pasila, its identity, the values associated with the area and how the area seems from the protection point of view. The work examines the starting points behind the realization of the area built in the 1970s, the ideologies of the design, and how the realization has responded to these aspirations.

The structural change in post-war society is one of the factors that significantly influenced the conditions of the 1960s and 1970s. The enormous need for housing production due to urbanization, new means of industry and, on the other hand, criticism of the construction of former residential areas all contributed to the change in the way construction was built – and thus in the cityscape.

The thesis considers what part the time and perspective play in the interpretation of the area and its values. The consideration of the background of aiming to effectiveness in urban planning helps to understand not only the past but the ambitions of current urban planning.

The main conclusion is that the modern architectural heritage, and especially the architecture of the 1960s and 1970s, is under threat, largely due to a lack of appreciation. However, this work states that the concrete suburbs tell something very important about their time. They are significant areas from historical and cultural point of views. Values of these suburbs are evolving and may become stronger in the future.

The thesis considers aspects related to the appreciation and protection of modern architectural heritage and examines the values that are present in Itä-Pasila, for example, as a representative of modern architectural heritage. The area is a manifestation of its own time, and its original intentions – such as functional, social and material ideas – appear both in the background of the plans and in the existing cityscape.

The main conclusion of the thesis is that there are many values in the area. Authenticity is one of the values of Itä-Pasila: the characteristics of the place exist regardless of time, although perspectives and attitudes towards them have varied over time. The area has evolved in time of course, and it has acquired new meanings and layers. Furthermore, completely new values may emerge from Itä-Pasila in the future. The district is a living example of the idea of a compact city. It tells the story of its time, and is a concrete reminder of the inevitable change in the environment, society and culture that takes place over time.
