Abstract
Study of light, the light that reflects off every material we are able to see, is the focus of this MA thesis, primarily study through artistic research and material research. The essence of light is examined in relation to woven textile materials, form, and empty space. Studying woven textiles in relation to light gives many possibilities, the relationship between transparency and opacity, the reflectivity of the material, and the effects that light produces depending on the form or layering of the material. This thesis investigates these phenomena between light and woven fabric through philosophical and artistic lens by creating lighting artwork in space, which demonstrates the possibilities of woven fabric in lighting design in a new way. In the material research, woven fabric samples are produced both by hand weaving and using an industrial weaving machine. In dozens of test samples, I examine how different structures and material choices in woven fabrics behave when studied in relation to light and form. After a process of selection and further investigation, two fabrics have been chosen that best embody the research themes. The final art piece features two different woven fabrics: one made from linen yarn using an industrial weaving machine, and the other from coated copper thread and linen yarn, woven by hand. This lighting art piece, composed of the two woven fabrics, will be placed in a gallery space, with its light sources designed based on the findings from my background and material research. An analysis of the final result will be conducted, comparing it to the initial inspiration and background research, specifically how the artwork reflects the phenomena between light and the chosen materials. The exhibition will also gather visitors’ observations, experiences, and opinions about the work, providing experiential insights from external viewers.Tutkimus valosta, valosta joka heijastuu jokaisesta näkyvissä olevasta materiaalista, on tämän maisterintutkielman keskeinen aihe, pääasiassa taiteellisen tutkimuksen ja materiaalitutkimuksen keinoin. Valon olemusta tarkastellaan suhteessa kudottuihin tekstiilimateriaaleihin, muotoon ja tyhjään tilaan.Tämä tutkielma tutkii näitä ilmiöitä valon ja kudotun kankaan välisessä suhteessa filosofisin ja taiteellisinkin linssin kautta luomalla valaistustaiteen teoksen tilaan, joka osoittaa kudotun kankaan mahdollisuuksia valaistussuunnittelussa uudella tavalla. Materiaali tutkimuksessa valmistetaan kudotun kankaan testi näytteitä käsin kutoen ja teollisella koneella kutoen. Kymmenissä testi näytteissä tutkitaan miten kudotun kankaan erilaiset rakenteen ja materiaalivalinnat toimivat kun niitä tutkitaan suhteessa valoon ja muotoon. Lopulta karsinta vaiheiden ja tutkimuksen jälkeen on valittu kaksi kangasta jotka ilmentävät parhaiten taustatutkimuksen aiheita. Lopullisen teoksen pääosassa ovat kaksi erilaista kudottua kangasta toinen kangas on valmistettu pellava langasta teollisella kutomakoneella ja toinen päällystetystä kuparilangasta sekä pellavalangasta käsin kutoen. Kahdesta kudotusta kankaasta koostuva valaisin teos, sijoitetaan tilaan ja sen valon lähteet suunnitellaan pohjaten taustatutkimuksen ja materiaalitutkimuksen havaintoihin. Lopputuloksesta suoritetaan analyysia verraten alun inspiraatioon ja tausta tutkimukseen,-Miten teoksessa näyttäytyy tutkimus valon ja valitun materiaalin välisistä ilmiöistä. Näyttelyssä kerätään vierailijoiden havaintoja, kokemuksia ja mielipiteitä työstä jonka kautta saadaan kokemustietoa ulkopuolisen silmin.Description
