Abstract

This thesis studies the dynamics of technology design battles when a new technological design enters the markets and aims to grow and challenge the current market dominator. One objective is to find the key factors that affect the success of the market entry and growth. The topic is studied in one selected context: the case industry is Finnish multi-storey construction industry and the new technological design is prefabricated timber elements. Four cases are selected from the industry to identify the change and growth factors from similar events from industry history and abroad. This study is part of larger study that researches Finnish timber industry and construct a business model for prefabricated timber elements in Finland. This study is conducted as qualitative, multiple case study research with experimental features from phenomenological research methodologies. Primary data source was interviews of key industry actors which were supported with recent theoretical and case industry research and publications, factory visit, and industry seminars. This thesis generates a framework that integrates relevant theoretical approaches and concepts and observations from the case industry. The key factors were named change and growth factors to describe the phase of market entry, and divided into seven subject categories. The framework with case study analyses complements and extends existing literature and provides a tool and learnings for the company management presenting a new technology design.

Tässä työssä tutkitaan toimialaevoluution näkökulmasta tilannetta, kun uusi teknologia pyrkii markkinoille ja haastaa hallitsevan teknologian. Työn päätavoite on löytää avaintekijät, jotka ovat onnistuneen markkinoilletulon taustalla. Aihetta tutkitaan Suomen kerrostalorakentamisen toimialalla, jonne on pyrkimässä uusi teknologia, esivalmistetut puuelementit. Tutkimus on osa laajempaa tutkimusta, jonka tavoitteena on laatia kilpailukykyinen liiketoimintamalli esivalmistetuille puuelementeille. Kun muissa osissa keskitytään Suomen markkinoille ja puutoimialaan, tässä tutkimuksessa tehdään vertailututkimus vastaavista tapauksista ulkomailta ja Suomen rakentamisen historiasta. Työ toteutettiin kvalitatiivisena monitapaustutkimuksena. Tutkimusmetodologia samalla kehitettiin ja siihen otettiin piirteitä fenomenologisesta tutkimuksesta. Pääasiallinen tutkimuslähde oli haastattelut, joiden lisäksi hyödynnettiin aiheeseen ja toimialaan liittyvää tutkimusta ja kirjallisuutta, tehdasvierailua ja seminaareja. Työssä kehitettiin viitekehys, johon yhdistettiin laaja-alaisesti akateemista tutkimusta ja toimialahavaintoja. Viitekehyksessä avaintekijät jaettiin seitsemään aihekategoriaan ja kahteen aikakategoriaan. Empiirisessä osiossa viitekehystä testattiin analysoimalla tapaukset sen avulla. Viitekehys ja empiirisen osion analyysit täydentävät ja laajentavat olemassa olevaa tutkimusta ja tuovat yritysjohdolle työkalun ja oppeja lähtiessään haastamaan markkinoiden hallitsevaa teknologiaa.
