Abstract
In a world where the fleeting interplay of light and shadows continuously crafts the canvas of our daily lives, this thesis explores the potential of ephemeral beauty to inspire textile design. Drawing inspiration from the delicate dance of natural light and its silhouettes, this study seeks to translate the transient language of shadows and luminosity of light into enduring designs, grounding the fleeting beauty of nature within tangible textiles. Employing a practice-based research methodology, this study bridges theoretical exploration with practical textile design, informed by the historical and contemporary significance of light and shadows in art. Like the Impressionists who captured ephemeral moments in nature through both direct observation and photography, this research uses similar visual documentation as a foundational tool. Photography not only captures fleeting interplays of light and shadows but also aids in creating detailed mood boards that steer the textile design process. These mood boards help translate theoretical insights into tangible textile designs, encapsulating the emotional and visual resonance of natural inspirations. Through continuous documentation, reflection, and adaptation of design strategies, the methodology enriches the creative process, allowing for a nuanced translation of ephemeral beauty into fabric forms. The creative process manifests in three textile collections: Quiet Gray, Luminous Afternoon, and Golden Harmony. Each collection embodies the temporal qualities of light and shadows throughout the day. Quiet Gray whispers the subtleties of dawn's light, Luminous Afternoon captures the stark clarity of daylight, and Golden Harmony echoes the tender hues of dusk. The thesis emphasizes the integration of weaving and printing methods in textile design, focusing on how these techniques can be combined to capture the tactile essence of light and shadows forms. Specifically, it explores the use of techniques such as jacquard with double-faced and double weave structures, fil coupé, and sublimation transfer printing, showcasing how these methods transform fleeting light into tangible, tactile experiences. Through experimental textile techniques, the collections evoke the elusive properties of their inspirations, offering a fresh perspective on the interaction between materiality and ephemeral beauty. In synthesizing the findings, the thesis underscores the unique challenges and successes in capturing the essence of light and shadows within textiles. The collections demonstrate remarkable versatility, suitable for fashion, clothing, and various interior applications such as draperies, affirming their broad applicability and potential impact on the textile industry. This work contributes new insights into the creative process, suggesting that the methods and outcomes detailed here can serve as a valuable resource for future designers. By transforming the intangible into tangible, this thesis invites viewers to join an aesthetic journey and serves as a practical guide for those inspired to explore similar transformations in their own design practices.Description
