Abstract

Companies associated with chemicals face different obligations depending on their role in the industry's supply chain. For example manufacturers of chemicals subject to different requirements than downstream chemical users who, subsequently, represent the far most end of the industry's chain. Specifically, what it comes to safety data sheets, the fulfilment of obligations is often laborious. As a result, a market for chemical documentation management services has emerged in order to provide more effective way to fulfil the industry's mandatory obligations of proper safety data sheet management. The current Chemical Documentation Management (CDM) markets have not been in the focus of academic research before even though an emerging business in the Nordic countries has been around for more than 15 years. In this thesis, current state and competitive scenario of the CDM market was evaluated through Porter's established five forces industry model. The model comprises five fundamental industry forces: 1. bargaining power of suppliers, 2. bargaining power of customers, 3. threat of new entrants, 4. threat of substitute products or services, and 5. existing industry rivalry. Each of the five presented competitive industry forces are presented more in detail in connection of the literature part in Chapter 3. In addition to the internal factors of competition, the CDM market is currently shaped by number of global trends such as Brexit and development of alike global chemical legislations. These themes are further discussed as one part of the literature part in Chapter 4. In the experimental part of this thesis, the bargaining power of customers of one company providing CDM services was investigated as a part of a broader market survey in the Finnish target market. The aim of the survey was to, among other things, find out to what extent the chemical companies had experience of outsourced chemical management services and, ultimately, provide information for the commissioned company in order to further develop its services. In the last part of this thesis, the presented five forces framework was implemented to cover the existing CDM industry. According to the market survey results and other findings obtained in the course of the research, 1. the CDM market is largely dependent on the work input of its employees and, in particularly on its quality, 2. the bargaining power of customers is not emphasized in the emerging market, 3. the new entrants to the market are limited specifically due to high switching cost of the chemical management systems, 4. there is no viable threat of substitute software/service for the current service under the prevailing state of technology, and 5. the competition in the industry is fierce and only just about to reach a point the existing companies can start to gain economies of scale.

Kemikaalien parissa toimivia yrityksiä koskevat eri velvoitteet riippuen niiden asemasta kemikaalien toimitusketjussa. Esimerkiksi kemikaalien valmistajia koskevat eri säännökset kuin vastaavasti toimitusketjun päässä olevia kemikaalien loppukäyttäjiä. Varsinkin käyttöturvallisuustiedotteiden osalta velvoitteiden täyttäminen on usein työlästä, minkä johdosta yritysten käyttöturvallisuustiedotteiden hallinnan tehostamiseksi on syntynyt kasvava markkina kemikaalidokumentaation hallinnan palveluja tarjoavia yrityksiä. Nykyiset kemikaalidokumentaatiohallinnan markkinat eivät ole aikaisemmin ole olleet akateemisen tutkimuksen keskiössä, vaikka Pohjoismaissa tähän on keskittynyt liiketoimintaa jo hieman yli 15 vuotta. Tässä diplomityössä kemikaalidokumentaatiohallinnan markkinoiden nykytila ja toimialan kilpailutilanne esitellään ensimmäistä kertaa Porterin viiden kilpailuvoiman mallin avulla. Malli sisältää viisi perustavanlaatuista kilpailutekijää: 1. toimittajien neuvotteluvoima, 2. asiakkaiden neuvotteluvoima, 3. uusien tulokkaiden uhka, 4. korvaavien tuotteiden tai palvelujen uhka, ja 5. yritysten välinen kilpailu. Jokainen mallin viidestä kilpailutekijästä esitellään tarkemmin kappaleessa 3 työn kirjallisessa osassa. Sisäisten kilpailutekijöiden lisäksi kemikaalidokumentaatiohallinnan markkinoita muovaavat tällä hetkellä lisäksi useat globaalit trendit, kuten esimerkiksi Britannian ero EU:sta sekä erinäisten lainsäädäntöjen yhdentyminen. Myös näitä teemoja käsitellään työn kirjallisessa osassa kappaleen 4 yhteydessä. Diplomityön kokeellisessa osassa tutkittiin erään käyttöturvallisuustiedotteiden hallinnan palveluja tarjoavan yrityksen asiakkaiden neuvotteluvoimaa osana laajempaa tutkimusta Suomen markkinoilla. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli muun muassa kartoittaa kemikaaleja käyttävien yritysten kokemuksia ulkoistetuista kemikaalitiedonhallinnan palveluista, sekä viime kädessä tuottaa tietoa työn toimeksiantaneelle yritykselle palveluidensa edelleen kehittämiseksi. Työn viimeisessä osassa, kirjallisuusosassa esitelty viiden kilpailuvoiman malli implementoitiin koskemaan nykyisiä kemikaalidokumentaation hallinnan markkinoita. Markkinatutkimuksen ja muiden tutkimuksen edetessä tehtyjen löydösten mukaan, 1. kemikaalidokumentaation markkinat ovat pitkälti riippuvaisia työntekijöidensä työpanoksesta ja etenkin sen laadusta, 2. toimi-alalla asiakkaiden neuvotteluvoima ei korostu alan kasvaessa, 3. uusien tulokkaiden markkinoille tulo on rajoittunutta etenkin korkeiden järjestelmien vaihtoehtoiskustannusten vuoksi, 4. korvaavaa sovellusta/palvelua nykyiselle palvelulle ei ole nähtävillä toistaiseksi nykyisen teknologian puitteissa, ja 5. alan yritysten kilpailu on kiivasta ja on vasta saavuttamassa pistettä, jossa alan yritykset voivat lähteä tavoittelemaan skaalaetuja.
