Outskirt - Keraaminen tuliveistos paikkasidonnaisena taiteena

Abstract

Taiteen maisterin opinnäytetyö Outskirt - keraaminen tuliveistos paikkasidonnaisena taiteena käsittelee tuliveistoskonseptin syntyä ja kehitystä sekä paikkasidonnaisen taiteen historiaa ja erilaisia ilmenemismuotoja. Lisäksi työ sisältää prosessikuvauksen yhdestä tuliveistosprojektista, joka toteutettiin Aalto yliopiston kampuksella Otaniemessä syyskuussa 2020.

Opinnäytetyö esittelee tuliveistoskonseptia sen kehittäjän Nina Holen työn kautta asettaakseen Outskirt-tuliveistoksen osaksi historiallista jatkumoa ja tehdäkseen siitä ymmärrettävämmän. Työ kertoo myös koko tuliveistoskonseptin kehityksestä ja ominaispiirteistä. Paikkasidonnaisen taiteen historian, esimerkkiteosten ja ajan kuluessa muuttuneiden käytäntöjen ja määrittelyjen avulla työ luo taustan, jota vasten tuliveistosperformanssia ja Outskirt-veistosta voidaan tarkastella.

Prosessikuvauksessa käydään läpi, mitä projektissa pääpiirteissään tapahtui alkaen idean ensiesittelystä päättyen tapahtuman jälkeiseen aikaan. Prosessikuvaus pitää sisällään lupaprosessit, rahoituksen hankkimisen, taiteellisen ja teknisen suunnittelun, logistiikan sekä fyysisen rakennus- ja polttoprosessin. Tutkimusmetodina on practice-led research. Tekemisen dokumentoinnin ja reflektoinnin tuottamia ajatuksia ja merkittävimpiä löydöksiä avataan loppupäätelmissä. Lopuksi kerrotaan jatkotutkimusmahdollisuuksista.

This master’s thesis Outskirt – a ceramic fire sculpture as a site-specific art is introducing the birth and development of the fire sculpture concept and the history and different forms of site-specific art through examples and changes through time. It also includes a description of the process of Outskirt, a ceramic fire sculpture and the insights born from the process.

The work explains the fire sculpture concept via its creator Nina Hole’s work to ease grounding the Outskirt to the field and historical continuity of fire sculptures. It also clarifies the evolution and features of the concept. By the introduction of the history, example works and the ever-broadening definitions of site-specific art it offers a background on which we can project the fire sculpture performance and the Outskirt sculpture.

In the process description the work reports the most important phases of the process from the initial introduction of the idea to the post firing work. It includes licence processes, funding, artistic and technical design, logistics and the physical constructing and firing processes. Research method was Practice-led research. Findings and insights that emerged through the process, documenting and reflection and how to possibly continue the research are explained at the end.
