Abstract
This thesis investigates the post-implementation challenges and benefits of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). With the ERP software market projected to reach US$49.38 billion in 2023 (Statista, 2023), the growing significance of these systems in modern business is evident. Despite larger enterprises historically leading in ERP adoption, a notable shift is observed, with SMEs increasingly adopting ERP systems to meet competitive pressures. Utilizing a thematic synthesis approach rooted in qualitative research methodology (Thomas & Harden, 2008), this thesis identifies three main themes of user-related, technology-related, and enterprise-related challenges and benefits of ERP system use in SMEs in the literature. The research emphasizes the interaction between post-implementation challenges and benefits in ERP systems, emphasizing the interdependence of these factors. Notably, the study highlights the critical role of training in ensuring efficient ERP system use in SMEs and recommends aligning business processes with ERP system capabilities. While providing valuable insights, the study identifies specific research gaps, underscoring the need for further research regarding post-implementation ERP system use in SMEs.Description
