dc.description.abstractThis thesis studies the Key Performance Indicators (KPl) in packet switched radio networks and the focus is on the Base Station Subsystem (BSS) KPIs in the EGPRS network. The aim of the thesis is to define the BSS KPIs through a literature study and to verify the KPIs via measurements, i.e. the purpose is to examine, which BSS KPIs in EGPRS should be used for network planning and monitoring, and how well the KPIs reflect the network performance and the end user experience. The literature study of this thesis, based on the 3GPP Rel'99 specifications, gives a description of the EGPRS functionality and special emphasis is put into describing the data transfer flows since these, to a great extent, define how to set the KPIs. Furthermore, end user services in packet switched radio networks are analyzed. The literature study shows that service differentiation is needed to utilize the capacity of the EGPRS network to its full extent, and a model for monitoring differentiated service performance based on treatment classes (TREC) is presented. However, the main objective of the literature study is to define the Base Station Subsystem KPIs in EGPRS that will then be tested in the measurements. The measurements conducted in this thesis aims at verifying the behaviour of the KPIs defined in the literature study. Based on the measurements, it can be observed that as long as the EGPRS network functions as a best-effort network it is challenging to monitor the individual end user experience from the BSS. Furthermore, it is shown that there is no superior quality KPl that indicates the end user experience better than the other quality KPIs in all conditions. On the contrary, in a few cases the KPIs give ambiguous information, and the ability of the quality KPIs to correctly interpret the end user experience varies according to the radio link quality and the end user service. Therefore, assumptions concerning the end user experience should never be made solely on one quality KPl. The results from this study can be used as a guide for network planners, to analyze and to optimize EGPRS networks more efficiently. The detailed description of the measurement setup and tools can be used as a guide in forthcoming measurements to test KPIs and network features. Currently there is limited information publicly available discussing KPIs and especially KPIs in packet switched radio networks. Therefore this thesis can also be considered as a suitable tutorial of KPIs for persons with basic knowledge in mobile networks.en
