Abstract
This thesis explores the role of a sole audio designer in small to medium-sized video game projects. It aims to uncover the creative, technical, and logistical issues that may arise when having autonomy, and the lack of support and resources that larger projects are provided with. It looks at the historical evolution and significance of adaptive audio, assesses the capabilities of middleware tools, and the set of responsibilities required when collaborating within interdisciplinary teams. Along with a comprehensive literature review, a thorough case study of the authors own game project is provided and uncovers practical methodologies for creating audio assets, designing adaptive music systems, and implementing integration techniques. Crucial challenges of the project and their solutions are categorised to display the key findings which emphasise the importance of establishing effective workflows, engaging early with game designers and narrative teams, and defining a common language and terms to facilitate collaboration across different disciplines. Finally, the results endeavour to provide a practical framework and best practices for sole audio designers and future recommendations are also provided.Description
