Abstract
Maisema-arkkitehtuurin diplomityössä tarkastellaan Helsingin itäisessä kantakaupungissa sijaitsevaa Hakaniementoria ja sen lähiympäristöä. Työn keskiöön asettuvat toripinnan ohella erityisesti alueen marginaalit – katukuilut, vihervyöhykkeet ja jalankulkuyhteydet. Alueen kaupunkirakennehistoriaan perehdytään selvitysosuudessa, jonka pohjalta on pyritty muodostamaan käsitys tarkastelualueen fyysisen ympäristön muodostumiseen vaikuttaneista kehityskuluista. Työn tavoitteena on laatia Hakaniementorille ja erityisesti sitä idässä rajaaville katu- ja puistoalueille kehityssuunnitelma, joka pohjautuu selvitystyön myötä tunnistettuihin arvoihin ja kehityskohteisiin. Työväenkaupunginosan perinteisenä kaupankäynnin ja kokoontumisen tilana halki vuosikymmenten näyttäytynyt Hakaniementori muodostaa koko Helsingin kontekstissa ainutlaatuisen kaupunki- ja maaseutukulttuurit yhteen tuovan saarekkeen, jonka ympärille on etenkin 1950-luvulta lähtien kasvanut Vironniemen Helsingin vanhan keskustan laajennusalue kaupallisine palveluineen. Hakaniementorin ja sitä kiertävän katuverkoston luonteet tulevat lähitulevaisuudessa muuttumaan. Hakaniemenrantaan 2020-luvulla rakennettavan uuden asuinalueen liittyminen toriin ja Kallion kaupunginosan kevyen liikenteen verkostoon ovat ratkaistaviksi tulevia kysymyksiä. Väliaikainen kauppahalli on poistunut aukiolta ja peruskorjauksen läpikäynyt vanha hallirakennus on tätä työtä laadittaessa (2023) jo avattu uudelleen. Tässä diplomityössä keskitytään tutkimaan näiden käynnissä olevien hankkeiden myötä avautunutta mahdollisuutta kehittää kaupallisesti vilkkaan ja monimuotoisen alueen julkista ulkotilaa. Työ koostuu kahdesta laajemmasta osakokonaisuudesta. Selvitysosuudessa luodaan katsaus Hakaniementorin ympäristön kaupunkirakenteen muodostumisen historiaan valokuva- ja arkistoaineistojen avulla. Tavoitteena on muodostaa suunnittelun taustatueksi monipuolinen ymmärrys alueen kerrostuneesti muovautuneesta kaupunkirakenteesta. Suunnitteluosuudessa torin ympäristön kehittämisen lähtökohdiksi nostetaan analyysin perusteella tunnistettujen kulttuurihistoriallisesti vaalittavien piirteiden ohella käytännölliset, nykyhetkellä vallitsevan tilanteen tarpeista nousevat viihtyisyyttä ja kevyen liikenteen yhteyksiä parantavat ratkaisut. Suunnitelmaa laadittaessa on pyritty tietoisesti tunnistamaan ajan hengen ilmiöitä, joita käytetään fyysisen ympäristön rakennuspalikoina. Keskeinen työn suunnitelmaosuudelle asetettu tavoite on kivikaupungin keskelle istutetun aukiotilan ja sitä ympäröivien kaupallisesti vilkkaiden korttelien sitominen entistä tiiviimmin yhteen viihtyisäksi ja vihreämmäksi olemisen ja jalankulun vyöhykkeeksi. Tavoitteena työssä on löytää toriympäristön kulttuuriperintöön empaattisesti suhtautuvia, Helsingille ominaisia ratkaisuja, jotka ottavat huomioon alueen erityisluonteen kaupallisesti vilkkaana liikenteen solmukohtana. Maisema-arkkitehtuurin keinoin on pyritty vahvistamaan toriaukion ja asuinkorttelien välistä yhteyttä ja alueelle tunnusomaisen kivijalkaliiketoiminnan elinvoimaisuuden edellytyksiä.This master’s thesis of landscape architecture studies Hakaniementori market square located in the eastern inner city of Helsinki. In addition to the market area, the work focuses on the margins of the square consisting of streets and green zones that form important pedestrian connections. The main goal of the work is to prepare a development plan for Hakaniementori and especially for the street and park areas bordering it in the east. The history of the urban structure of the area is explored in the survey that forms the first part of the work. Based on findings and identified key values a development plan for the area is presented in the second part of the work. Hakaniementori, which has stood out for decades as a traditional place for trading and gathering in the working-class district, forms a unique public space in the context of Helsinki. For decades the market activities have brought together urban and rural communities of the country. The nature of Hakaniementori and the street network surrounding it will change in the near future. The construction of the new residential area of Hakaniemenranta on the south side of the square and the light rail connection from the eastern suburbs will transform the area and generate new needs for pedestrian connections. The temporary market hall has been removed from the square and the old market hall building, which underwent renovation, has already been reopened at the time of this work (2023). In this master’s thesis the focus is on investigating the possibility opened up by these currently ongoing projects to develop the public outdoor space of a commercially lively and diverse area. The first part of this work is a survey that forms an overview of the history of the Hakaniemi market square and its surroundings. The historical development of the area is studied with the help of photographs and archive materials. The goal has been to develop a diverse understanding of the stratified urban structure of the area to lay comprehensive groundwork for the planning part. The key objective of the planning part is to develop the area by strengthening the connectivity between the market square and its neighboring areas. The solution proposed in the work concentrates on creating a unified and pedestrian-friendly urban structure that provides opportunities for street life and commercial activities in the public outdoor space. The spatial solutions presented are based on key values identified in the first part of the work. The goal of the work is to find solutions that have an empathetic approach to the cultural heritage of the historical environment and that consider the special nature of the area as a commercially active traffic hub. By means of landscape architecture, efforts have been made to strengthen the connection between the market square and the residential blocks and the prerequisites for the vitality of the commercial services in the area.Description
