Abstract

Electrocardiogram (ECG) measures the electrical activity of the heart. It is one of the most significant and commonly used vital sign parameters monitored for example in intensive care units and operation rooms. ECG is obtained by placing electrodes on skin surface and measuring potential differences between them. Since ECG monitoring involves measuring of signals with human contact, the requirements for safety must be high. Several standards exist which contain a collection of requirements that define limits for safety and performance of a device. They cannot be forced, but government officials can make them effectively mandatory by requiring compliance of a standard as a condition to market a device. Testing compliance of a medical device with the requirements of ECG standards is an important part of product development, and therefore the test system should be reliable and simple to use. In this thesis, an improved and simplified version of the current test system in GE Healthcare, Monitoring Solutions, was designed to reduce the time of the ECG standard compliance testing and increase reliability and repeatability. The scope was to develop a computer application to generate the test signals defined in the standards to the device under test and provide the user interface of the test system. Signal generation and adjustment was automated as much as possible to avoid manual adjustment of the signals during the testing process. The input signals generated in the test system are defined in IEC 60601-2-27, ANSI/AAMI EC13 and ANSI/AAMI EC11 standards. A graphical user interface, signal generation and control logic were implemented with LabVIEW virtual instrumentation program. LabVIEW enables handling of control logic by using digital channels of a data acquisition card and it provides a variety of signal generation functions. Various test signals, that simulate for example physiological signals, are fed from a PC through the data acquisition card further to test circuitry of the test system and via an ECG cable to the device under test. The device's response to the test signal is verified by inspecting the device's display, which can be either permanent or nonpermanent.

Elektrokardiogrammi (EKG) mittaa sydämen sähköistä toimintaa. Se on yksi merkittävimmistä ja yleisimmin käytetyistä potilasvalvontasignaaleista teho-osastoilla ja leikkaussaleissa. EKG saadaan asettamalla elektrodeja ihon pinnalle ja mittaamalla näiden elektrodien potentiaalieroja. EKG mittaa ihmisestä peräisin olevia signaaleja, joten EKG-monitorien turvallisuusvaatimusten pitää olla korkeat. Standardit ovat dokumentteja, jotka määrittelevät rajat monitorien turvallisuudelle ja suorituskyvylle. Standardit ovat suosituksia, eivätkä näin ollen pakollisia laitteen valmistajille, mutta usein viranomaiset vaativat tiettyjen standardien täyttämistä edellytyksenä laitteen myymiselle. Lääketieteellisten laitteiden EKG-standardinmukaisuuden testaus on tärkeä osa tuotekehitystä, ja testilaitteiston tulisi sen takia olla luotettava ja helppokäyttöinen. Tässä työssä GE Healthcare, Monitoring Solutions -yksikölle suunniteltiin parannettu ja yksinkertaistettu testausjärjestelmä nykyisen tilalle, jotta EKG-standardinmukaisuustesteihin menevää aikaa saataisiin lyhennettyä ja luotettavuutta ja toistettavuutta parannettua. Tarkoituksena oli suunnitella ohjelmisto, joka luo standardin määrittelemiä signaaleja testattavalle laitteelle, ja toteuttaa käyttöliittymä testijirjestelmä11e. Signaalien tuottaminen ja säätö automatisoitiin mahdollisimman pitkälle, jotta vältettäisiin niiden manuaalinen säätö testauksen aikana. Tuotetut testisignaalit on määritelty IEC 60601-2-27, ANSI/AAMI EC13 ja ANSI/AAMI EC11 -standardeissa. Graafinen käyttöliittymä, signaalin generointi ja kontrollilogiikka toteutettiin virtuaalisen instrumentointiohjelman, LabVIEW:n, avulla. LabVIEW:ssä on mahdollista toteuttaa ohjauslogiikka tiedonkeruukortin digitaalisten kanavien avulla, ja siinä on useita funktioita signaalien luontiin. Useita testisignaaleita, jotka simuloivat esimerkiksi fysiologisia signaaleja, syötetään tietokoneelta tiedonkeruukortin kautta testisysteemin testipiirille ja EKG-kaapelin kautta testattavaan laitteeseen. Laitteen vaste testisignaaleihin todennetaan tutkimalla laitteen piirturia tai näyttöä.
