How to minimize C02 emissions by using renewable energy? - Critical review of different options

Abstract

There are rising concerns related to climate change and as a solid and widely approved climate agreement is still missing, the importance of voluntary actions has ever increased. Corporations have an increasing interest on climate change mitigation due to stakeholder expectations, regulatory risk, and financial- and reputational reasons. The focus is on company's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions as it is the major anthropogenic greenhouse gas. The primary objective of this thesis was to present the framework and important considerations behind company's CO2 emissions, and to find out the most credible method to reduce them by using renewable energy based options. The literature review was made predominantly with the help of article collections and research tools. The paper provides a short review of the current climate change policy backgrounds, presents the considerations behind measuring CO2 emissions and the different renewable energy based methods to reduce them, summarizes Nokia's stakeholders' standing to the different methods and critically reviews them with the help of appropriate criteria and interviewees, and cost analysis.

Some key findings could he made on the basis of the interviews and literature survey. There is a strong need for clarification of the green power market and a need for widely recognized and approved renewable electricity product. As that is currently not the case there is a strong variation in how the different options are valued. There is also variation in the quality of different product types. According to the interviews and cost analysis, building own on-site renewable energy is seen as the most credible long-term solution. Second most preferred option is still unclear but according to the product comparison, Gold Standard carbon credit and Gold Power renewable electricity product seem to best meet the chosen credibility criteria and hence, offer a good short-term solution.

Huoli ilmastonmuutosta kohtaan on lisääntynyt ja tilanteessa, jossa vakaa ja laajasti hyväksytty ilmastosopimus vielä puuttuu, vapaaehtoisten toimien merkitys on vain kasvanut. Yritykset ovat yhä enemmän kiinnostuneita torjumaan ilmastonmuutosta johtuen useista eri syistä: sidosryhmien odotuksista, regulatiivisista riskeistä, taloudellisista syistä ja myös maineeseen liittyvistä syistä. Diplomityössä keskitytään yrityksen hiilidioksidipäästöihin (C02), sillä hiilidioksidi on yksi merkittävimmistä ihmisen aiheuttamista kasvihuonekaasuista. Pääasiallinen tavoite tässä diplomityössä oli esitellä teoreettinen kehys ja tärkeimpiä näkökohtia yrityksen C02-päästöjen laskentaan, ja selvittää kaikkein uskottavin tapa vähentää niitä käyttämällä uusiutuviin energialähteisiin pohjautuvia vaihtoehtoja. Kirjallisuuskatsaus tehtiin pääasiassa artikkelikokoelmien avulla ja käyttämällä eri etsintätyökaluja. Työssä esitetään lyhyt katsaus nykyisen ilmastopolitiikan taustoihin ja näkökohtia sekä C02-päästöjen laskemiseen että uusiutuviin energianlähteisiin pohjautuviin menetelmiin, joilla voidaan vähentää niitä. Työssä tiivistetään Nokian sidosryhmien asennoituminen eri menetelmiin, joita tarkastellaan kriittisesti työssä määritetyn kriteeristön, haastateltavien ja kustannusanalyysin avulla.

Haastattelujen ja kirjallisuusanalyysin pohjalta pystyttiin tekemään joitain keskeisiä havaintoja. Markkinoilla on suuri tarve sekä selventää vihreän sähkömarkkinan ja vapaaehtoisen päästökaupan toimintaa että löytää laajasti tunnettu ja hyväksytty uusiutuvaan energiantuotantoon pohjautuva tuote. Koska tällä hetkellä sellaista tuotetta ei ole, eri vaihtoehtoja arvotetaan eri tavalla. Voidaan myös todeta, että eri tuotetyyppien laaduissa on vaihtelevuutta. Haastattelujen ja kustannusanalyysin mukaan oman uusiutuvan energiantuotannon rakentaminen on uskottavin pitkän aikavälin ratkaisu. Toiseksi uskottavin vaihtoehto on vielä epäselvä, mutta tuotteiden kriittisen vertailun pohjalta voi todeta, että Gold Standard päästövähennyshyvitys ja Gold Power vihreä sähkötuote täyttävät asetetut kriteerit parhaiten ja täten tarjoavat hyvän lyhyen aikavälin ratkaisun.
