Abstract
If the current trends continue, the whole address space of the current version of the Internet Protocol, IP version 4 (IPv4), will be allocated by 2012. The upcoming IPv4 address shortage was one of the reasons for developing the new version of the Internet Protocol, IP version 6 (IPv6). The transition to IPv6 has started. The transitional period introduces challenges for network operators and service providers, as the two versions of the protocol are not compatible with each other. Most current Internet services are available only on the IPv4 network. In this thesis an IPv4 to IPv6 multicast translator is implemented to ease the transition to IPv6. The translator enabies IPv6 hosts to join IPv4 multicast groups in a way which does not require modifications in senders or receivers, making current IPv4 multicast services available on an IPv6 network. The translator is easily deployable to most current networks. The translator is implemented as a new component of MRD6 multicast router on Linux. The translator follows the architectural ideas and address translation presented in MCAST46 Internet-Draft. IPv4 to IPv6 protocol translation is done using the Stateless IP/ICMP Translation Algorithm (SIIT) which is adapted for multicast translation in this thesis. As delivering digital television services over an IP network (IPTV) is an important multicast service, the translator is implemented and tested with the specific requirements of 1PTV in mind.

Jos IP-osoitteiden käyttö lisääntyy nykyisellä tahdilla, koko nykyisen Internetprotokollaversion (IPv4) osoiteavaruus on varattu vuoteen 2012 mennessä. Tuleva osoitepula on yksi syistä, joka johti uuden Internet-protokollaversion (IPv6) kehittämiseen. Siirtymä uuteen IPv6-protokollaan on alkanut. Siirtymäkausi luo uusia haasteita verkko-operaattoreille ja palveluntarjoajille, koska Internet-protokollan kaksi eri versiota eivät ole keskenään yhteensopivia. Suurin osa Internetin palveluista on saatavilla vain vanhan IPv4- protokollan välityksellä. Tässä diplomityössä toteutettiin IPv4-IPv6-protokollamuunnin ryhmälähetyksille. Protokollamuuntimen avulla IPv6-verkossa voidaan vastaanottaa IPv4-ryhmälähetyksiä, mikä osaltaan helpottaa siirtymää uuteen protokollaversioon. Muuntimen avulla IPv4-verkon ryhmälähetyspalvelut ovat käytettävissä IPv6-verkossa. Protokollamuunnin on helppo asentaa nykyisiin verkkoihin, eikä sen käyttäminen vaadi muutoksia IPv4-ryhmälähetyksiä lähettäviin laitteisiin tai IPv6-verkossa oleviin vastaanottajiin. Protokollamuunnin toteutettiin Linuxilla osaksi ryhmälähetyksiä reitittävää MRD6- ohjelmistoa. Protokollamuunnin noudattaa MCAST46-Internet-standardiluonnoksessa esitettyä arkkitehtuuria ja osoitemuunnosalgoritmia. Itse protokollamuunnos toteutettiin tilattomalla SIIT-muunnosalgoritmilla, jota diplomityössä mukautettiin ryhmälähetysten muuntamista varten. Protokollamuunnin toteutettiin ja testattiin huomioiden Internetin yli välitettävien digi-tv-lähetysten (IPTV) erityisvaatimukset, koska IPTV on yksi tärkeimmistä ryhmälähetystä käyttävistä palveluista.
