Abstract
The objective of the thesis was to investigate biofuel drying in a pile and its' functionality and profitability. The investigated biofuel pile is situated at the yard of the CHP-power plant owned by Kokkolan Voima Oy. Many advantages are achieved my means of drying biofuel, among others improved heating value and better storability. The literature survey done in this thesis focused on the things affecting both the biofuel drying in a pile and the dry matter loss of biofuel during pile storage. It was found in the literature, that the dry matter loss is 2-5 % per month during the first 1-2 months and after that approximately 1 % per month. These values are valid, when biofuel is dried without air fans. There were not given any values for dry matter loss during the pile drying of biofuel with air fans in the literature. As a result of drying, the energy content of biofuel increases and the cost estimate is based on this increment. Moisture samples were taken from the pile to find out the amount of evaporated water during the drying period. Moisture samples gave also the moisture distribution both in cross-section and in lengthwise direction of the pile. As a result of drying, the energy content of biofuel increases approximately 2780 MWh in Kokkola. This increment is used to reduce the amount of peat as a power plant fuel. The emissions of carbon dioxide from peat burning also decrease. Cost estimate takes into account, that by drying a pile with air fans the dry matter loss of biofuel is less than by drying without air fans. According to the cost estimate the payback period of the drying equipment is approximately 14-15 years. A test rig was built in the laboratory to simulate the pile drying in Kokkola. The influence of volume flow, drying temperature and the volume of the pile on the drying time of biofuel was investigated. According to the results the volume flow and the volume of a pile affect significantly the drying time of biofuel in a pile.

Kustannuslaskelman perusteella kuivauslaitteiston takaisinmaksuaika on n. 14 - 15 vuotta. Työn aikana rakennettiin laboratorioon pienoismalli Kokkolan aumakuivurista.
