Abstract
This thesis examines the classification and retrieval of surface defect images using shape features. These images are created using special inspection systems that photograph the surface of a continuously moving web of material, with even illumination and a constant camera distance and orientation. The images depict defects in the material surface, caused by a range of different faults. The objective is to classify the nature of the defect based on its visual features, or index the images so that defects of a desired type can be efficiently retrieved from an image database. Shape features commonly used in such pattern recognition applications are reviewed, and two novel statistical shape features are described. These features, the Edge Co-occurrence Matrix and the Contour Co-occurrence Matrix describe second-order statistics of an image, and show improved discriminatory power over their first-order counterparts. Two case studies are described, a database containing metal surface defect images and another containing paper surface defect images. The Co-occurrence Matrix features and the features that have previously been found to work well with these databases are compared through experiments. The classification performance and Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) performance of the features are examined. Also the effects of scale and rotation invariance in processing this type of image data are examined.
