Business Intelligence – Users and Psychological Ownership

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to develop an in-depth understanding of how user involvement and participation in the development of business intelligence systems and reports affect the user adoption, and attitudes of the developed tools. Previous research suggests that psychological ownership of IT is stronger when the user has participated in the development process of IT systems or been involved with their IT tools. However, studies from the field have investigated that the enduser of a BI is rarely involved in the development process, often leading to poor quality of the system and project failure. This research attempts to find more in-depth argumentation on how this gap affects the use of BI systems through semi-structured interviews within a case company. Further, the goal is to identify the different ways users may participate or get involved in the development, in addition to understand factors that enhance psychological ownership over the system and active usage of it.
