Abstract
Tämän lisäksi betonien osa-aineiden huono laatu on voinut heikentää historiallisten betonien ominaisuuksia. Diplomityössä annetaan suositus ennen vuotta 1930 valmistettujen betonirakenteiden kuntoselvityksen suorittamiseksi.

Before nineteen thirty century constructed concrete structures in Finland are typically very challenging preparation projects because the properties of historic concretes are not well known in Finland. Historic concretes differ significantly from the modern concretes especially regarding to the micro-structure and mechanical properties. There were different alternatives in the development and for that reason the properties of cement and concrete varied depending on the location. Also the knowledge was based on the professionality and experience rather than standards or written documents. For all these reasons and historic concretes may have very different properties. Therefore, in case of historic concrete structures, the concrete must be investigated carefully before starting the reparation work. This master’s thesis handles the properties of 1860-1920 century concretes. Addi-tionally the investigation and preparation methods are covered. The thesis includes literature part and two laboratory research cases. The handled cases are the fountain of House of the Estates and the railing of National Archives of Finland. The most significant difference between modern and historic concrete is the binder. Between the mid-1800 and 1900s several different kinds of binders were used. Many historic binder contain high concentrations of belite (C2S). In case of high concentration of the belite, the strength development was slower and also the final strength were lower in compared to modern cements with high alite (C3S) content. In addition to the different clinker composition, historic binders were coarser and the concrete proportioning, mixing, and curing were more defective than nowadays. As a conclusion a procedure for preparation research is introduced. The conclusion highlights the importance of the visual inspection and test sampling locations. The primer recommendation for research is petrographic thin section method. Nowadays petrographic thin section appears to be the most efficient method for investigating the properties of historic concrete. Research methods for the binder type and age assessment of historic concrete should be further developed. Additionally the procedure for preparation plan selection was introduced in the thesis.
