Black phosphorus: Density functional theory and projector augmented wave method based calculation of phonon band structure and other physical properties

Abstract

Density functional theory (DFT) simplifies a problem related to any system consisting of interacting electrons in an external potential where the Hamiltonian can be written in the form that consists of terms for the kinetic energy, the external potential and the Coulomb interactions. The idea is that the total energy of the system is calculated as a functional of the electron density that is introduced in each term where electron interactions are present.

The projector augmented wave (PAW) method is a method based on pseudopotentials that replaces the difficult all-electron wave functions with smooth pseudo-wavefunctions in the core region. In the core region the all-electron wave functions are often difficult to represent analytically and play a negligible role in the valence states. The smooth functions introduced in the PAW method reproduce the effects of the core region outside of the augmentation region.

We use these methods to calculate physical properties of the crystalline orthorhombic black phosphorus and also give a review of the other currently known allotropes of elemental phosphorus. We calculate the lattice parameters and the elastic constants of orthorhombic black phosphorus within the approximation of quasi-harmonic elasticity and use the so called finite displacement method to calculate the phonon band structure for the optimised structure of black phosphorus.

For our calculations we use the Atomic Simulation Environment (ASE) software package for Python that allows one to set up and run atomistic simulations. With ASE we use a calculator called GPAW that is a grid-based real-space implementation of the projector augmented wave method for density functional theory.

Tiheysfunktionaaliteoria (eng. DFT) yksinkertaistaa ulkoisessa potentiaalissa oleviin toistensa kanssa vuorovaikuttaviin elektroneihin liittyvän ongelman, jossa Hamiltonin operaattori voidaan kirjoittaa muodossa, jossa on kineettisestä energiasta, ulkoisesta potentiaalista ja Coulombin vuorovaikutuksesta aiheutuvat termit. Ideana on, että systeemin kokonaisenergia voidaan laskea funktionaalina elektronitiheydestä, joka sijoitetaan jokaiseen termiin, jossa elekronien vuorovaikutusten kontribuutio on mukana.

Projektoriaugmentoituaaltomenetelmä (eng. PAW) on menetelmä, joka pohjautuu pseudopotentiaaleihin ja korvaa analyyttisesti vaikeat kaikkien elektronien kokonaisaaltofunktiot sileillä pseudoaaltofunktioilla atomin ytimen alueella. Ytimen alueella kokonaisaaltofunktiot ovat usein vaikeita esittää analyyttisesti ja niillä on hyvin vähäinen rooli valenssitiloilla. PAW-menetelmän sileät funktiot toisintavat ytimen alueen vaikutukset jonkin ennalta valitun säteen määrittämän augmentaatioalueen ulkopuolella.

Näitä menetelmiä käyttämällä lasketaan mustan fosforin kristallirakenteeseen liittyviä fysikaalisia ominaisuuksia ja sen lisäksi käydään läpi kirjallisuuskatsaus fosforin tällä hetkellä tunnetuista allotroopeista. Mustalle fosforille lasketaan hilavakiot ja elastiset vakiot kvasiharmonisen elastisen teorian rajoissa. Lisäksi mustalle fosforille lasketaan fononien vyörakenne hyödyntämällä niin kutsuttua äärellistä siirtymämenetelmää.

Laskuissa käytetään Python-pohjaista ohjelmistopakettia nimeltään Atomic Simulation Environment (ASE), joka mahdollistaa atomististen simulaatioiden järjestämisen ja ajamisen. ASE-paketin kanssa käytetään laskinta nimeltä GPAW, joka on hilapohjainen reaaliavaruuteen pohjautuva sovellus PAW-menetelmästä tiheysfunktionaaliteorialle.
