Abstract
An electricity generation portfolio in the Nordic power system is changing. The penetration of renewable energy sources to the Nordic power system is increasing rapidly and there have been decommissions of unprofitable thermal power plants. Renewable energy is highly weather dependent and renewable electricity generation methods are utilising power electronic technologies. Thus, it can be concluded that characteristics of the Nordic power system are changing and the changes in the power system will happen faster in the future. System operators must do rapid decisions when balancing the supply and demand after a disturbance. These situations will be more complicated when the penetration of the renewable energy in the power system is greater. This thesis consists of a literature review and a research part. The literature review includes relevant information about electric power transmission, stability, the Nordic power system and security assessment. The literature review creates a basis for the software development process. Creating the software and analysing the software development process forms the research part of this thesis. Developed software merges a real-time model of Finland and a model of the Nordic synchronous system and performs dynamic stability analysis for this merged model continuously. Dynamic stability is under interest because a common feature in the Finnish main grid is that power transmission distances are long. This will cause the phenomenon that dynamic stability is the limiting factor of power transmission. Purpose in this thesis was to find out what kind of problems will occur in the process and how these problems could be solved. Software was written with Python and power system planning software PSS/E was widely utilised in the process. As a result of this study, first version of the software that supervises the voltage and rotor angle stability in close real-time was created. However, different development ideas or problems occurred during the software development process and not all of these could be solved in this thesis. Hence, the future development of the software and the process are highly recommended.
