dc.description.abstract The pace of urban life, information overload, visual and noise pollution, invasive advertising and other external factors constantly overstimulate our senses, altering and distorting our perception of reality. Today, it is difficult to find an evocative space for inspiration which is not only an aesthetically pleasing site, but also psychologically and emotionally neutral, a space where it is possible to concentrate, clear the mind, the consciousness and the artistic sensibilities. To help satisfy this need, the thesis focuses on designing an “Artist Residency” where artists can rent for a certain period of time (weeks or months) not only a common bedroom, but also a studio in which to be inspired and creative in any form of art. The site chosen for the project is on Iso Vassikkasaari, which lies on the northern side of the city of Espoo, has rich nature. A scheduled archipelago boat stops at the island’s pier, which provides easy access to the island. The island features rugged terrain, luxuriant vegetation and the vast sea. The goal of the design is to preserve the original natural environment as much as possible and enable artists to experience the forest and the sea at different spots. The concept of the design is a horizontal trail that starts from the forest and goes directly towards the sea. The building will serve as a horizontal “observation tower” and allows various art activities to occur. The building is divided according to the working style of the artists and the visitors' movement. The floor plan of the building is flexible to adjust to the different needs of the artists, and it could be opened totally to create a space that can be walked through. Additionally, a special structure is used to make the building appear to hover above the sea. en
