Abstract
Yksityistymisen asumiselle asettamat vaatimukset heijastuvat muutospaineena kaupunkitilassa.

In the first part of this study, The History Written in Stone, the viewpoint and methodology are similar to traditional research of the History of Architecture. It gives a background to the region and the target city of the study. After describing my arrival onto the research field and my first impressions, I characterize the southern identity, as seen by the inhabitants of the region themselves. I shortly describe the long history of the southern Italy, and the position of the Salento Region in the periphery of a migrating focus. In the first chapter I give examples about the appearance of the history and economy of the region in several cities in the southern Italy. Special attention is paid to a similarity with other towns in the Islamic World. After a broad contextualition, I focus on the actual object of my research work in the second chapter. In the second part, The Rules of the Game, I describe and explain those rules of social life that are repeated in the discourse: the public and the private, the honor and the lack of it. Without knowing them, it is difficult to understand the construction of space. I describe the organization (and division) of the urban space into public, semipublic, semiprivate and private parts. The boundary between private and public space is not clear and it is redefined in the discourse. The ability to make a judgement between them is seen as civility, civiltà; the lack of civility represents a backward lifestyle. The requirements that the growing need of privacy puts on habitation are reflected in the urban space. In the public space of the city as well as in their private homes, the inhabitants maintain a "social mask"; noting that it is real life instead of a play, one could criticize this theater metaphor, though the actors take it seriously. The third part, On the Stage and Behind describes how the interaction rules of the game are realized in the built environment. The key elements are the organization of the space based on kinship, such as the policy adopted on dowries and inheritance, as well as the spatial division by sex. Here I describe on a detail level a typical Mediterranean townhouse with an inner courtyard in the southern Italy. The rules of the social life are reflected in the symbolic order of the dwelling. The fourth part, Changing City, contains an analysis of the changes that have taken place in the recent past and still are going on, showing the underlying ideals and values. The urban structure conserves memories, with a resistance to changes, but major transformations and discontinuities of the cities make it difficult - if not impossible - the return to the past when time passes. In the southern Italy, these changes appear as movements into opposite directions: In the end of the 19th century, a centrifugal force was driving urbanization onto the fields outside the city walls, and later during the last decades of 20th century - at least in the discourse - a reappraisal of the historical built environment has gained power. The conclusion of my study contains a brief contemplation on the future of the old town center.
