Abstract

Knowledge of the benefits gained from usable software has by now reached most organizations involved in commissioning or developing computer systems. Therefore it is somewhat surprising to find serious usability problems in computer systems that have been developed specifically for a known task and user group. There is an abundance of system development models, which cater to the development of usable computer systems. Unfortunately there is a lack of published results which report what usability problems resulted from a real-world development project, and what were the reasons behind these problems. In this Master's thesis I studied the Finnish Transport Safety Agency's VERO, REKI and PIIKO computer systems in order to find the systems' essential usability problems and their causes. I acquainted myself with the systems by interviewing the systems' users and people who took part in their development. I also used documentation related to the systems to gain information about them. From the assembled information I constructed a model of how usability problems emerge during a software development process. The model is general enough to be useful for other software development processes. I also gave the Finnish Transport Safety Agency some recommendations on how to avoid usability problems in future systems. As a result of this study I can state that a large portion of the essential usability problems encountered had their roots in the system specification stage of systems development. During the software development process there are several factors that hinder or promote the discovery and correction of usability problems. These factors can be influenced through organizational- and work culture, the chosen software development model, as well as through a user and customer centered attitude.
