Abstract

The aim of this thesis was to find a suitable method to produce traceable carbon dioxide - nitrogen mixtures for 0,01...2 % carbon dioxide concentration. The new method was supposed to be more accurate than the existing one. An additional aim was to consider the suitability of the method to produce different gas mixtures as well, e.g. oxygen - nitrogen mixtures. On the basis of the accomplished market analysis the research was focused on a mixing system involving mass flow controllers. For the tests thermal and differential pressure based mass flow controllers were ordered, both types from different manufacturers. Series of test calibrations, similar to those used for present thermal controllers were then carried out. The performances of the controllers were compared by correction to the mass flow reading, repeatability and hysteresis of the measurement. To find out possible pressure dependence of mass flow readings additional calibrations were carried out to nitrogen controllers, with two different supply pressures. The controller type in use was excluded. On the basis of the calibration results, the mass flow controller type currently in use was not the best of the controllers included in the tests. At the lowest carbon dioxide concentration reachable (0,07 %) with the calibration ranges the standard uncertainty of the mass flow reading was with the best test controller type 0,19 % for the CO2 controller, and 0,01 % for the N2 controller. The standard uncertainty oftargeted 0,01 % C02 concentration could not be estimated due to limitations of the calibration ranges.
