Abstract
Arkkitehtuurin opinnäytetyössäni tarkastelen julkisen tilan kysymyksiä arkkitehtuurin ja kaupunkisuunnittelun näkökulmasta. Pohdin, miten teknologian kehitys vaikuttaa julkisen tilan käsitteeseen. Tutkimuskysymykseni ovat: Mitä julkinen tila on tänä päivänä? Miten teknologian kehitys siihen vaikuttaa? Julkisen tilan tarkastelu koostuu kolmesta osasta. Ensimmäinen osa tarkastelee julkista tilaa käsitteenä. Toinen osa havainnoi julkisen tilan muutosta teknologian kehityksen näkökulmasta.

My master’s thesis examines questions related to the public space from the perspective of architecture and city planning. I reflect on how the development of technology affects the concept of the public space. My research questions are: What is public space today? How does technological development affect public space? The examination of public space consists of three parts, three different perspectives. The first part looks at public space as a concept. The second part is trying to understand how the notion of public space is changing from the perspective of recent technological development. The third part introduces the contemporary art museum Kiasma and the urban space around it. The thesis reveals that the common and shared public space has become ever more complex and its design more and more polyphonic during the last twenty years since Kiasma was built. The Internet and new technologies have brought new kinds of spaces and information environments which can be defined as public space. At the same time technological development is affecting how we understand and relate to the physical public space around us and to others who use it. We need new ways to talk about public space. We need places in which different subject positions, from architects, technology researchers and political scientists could be reasoned, where all these different thoughts could intersect. The value of sharing thoughts is not in inherent participation, but in the possibilities to discover the blind spots related to each specific subject position, discipline and vocabulary.
