Abstract
Biopolttoaineiden kulutuksen kasvun myötä puiden käyttö energiantuotannossa on lisääntynyt huomattavasti viime vuosikymmenten aikana. Mittauslaitteen ohjelmisto jouduttiin suunnittelemaan kokonaan uudestaan ensimmäisen prototyypin ohjelmiston dokumentoinnin puutteellisuuden vuoksi. Tutkimuksessa esitetyt ratkaisut vastasivat hyvin laitteen kehitykselle asetettuja vaatimuksia. Jatkokehittämällä dimensiometriä voidaan saada erittäin luotettavia puun tilavuuden mittaustuloksia tulevaisuudessa.

The use of trees in energy production has increased considerably with the growth in biofuel consumption over the last few decades. Thus, also determining the total volume of trees has become a very important part of the management of forest resource information. The Department of Forest Sciences at the University of Helsinki and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Aalto University co-developed the first prototype of branch volume measuring instrument, called dimension meter. In dimension meter, the volume of the branch is measured by using Archimedes’ principle so that the branch is immersed in the water tank and the device measures the buoyancy on the branch relative to the immersion depth. In this research, solutions are sought and a new version of the dimension meter is designed to improve the technical issues of the first prototype encountered during the tests. The development targets found from the previous research results include stabilization of the lifting and lowering process, improved measurement accuracy of the sensor, continuous need for calibrating the load cell, minimizing the measurement error, increasing the maximal load, increasing the dimension meter’s size, storing interface parameters and attaching the measurement piece. In order to attain the objectives of the work, the related literature and the publications will be familiarized. Solutions to the problems and demands that have emerged from the user experiences are sought from solutions in literature and by utilizing the learned approaches, guidelines and processes. The mechanics of the measuring instrument remained nearly same as in the previously developed device, but the mechanical problems detected in the first prototype were improved in the new version. The electronics of the measuring instrument also remained almost same as in the previously developed device. The selection of components emphasized cost minimization and good measurement accuracy. The software of the measuring instrument had to be completely re-engineered due to the incomplete documentation of the first prototype software. The solutions outlined in the study were well in line with the requirements for the device development. Further development of a dimensional meter can provide highly reliable tree volume measurement results in the future.
