Abstract
Paper industry has traditionally emphasized the efficiency and economies of scale in its manufacturing processes. Inarguably, this view can be seen justified as paper manufacturing is highly capital intensive. However, within the current tightening market situation and ever more demanding customers, there should flexibility incorporated in the operations as well to deal with the situation. It should also be noted that in the tightening competition, there can be other order-winning criteria than only the cost, such as fast delivery times, flexibility and customization. Incorporating these to offering can of course result in increased complexity of operations. Therefore, more emphasis should be given to researching the sources of complexity and the ways to manage the value-adding complexity factors. This thesis work researches sources of complexity within the focal company office paper supply chain. The main sources of complexity were defined as range complexity and process complexity, initially resulting from large variety of brand and customer specific packaging materials defining the products. To cope with this complexity, the thesis presents an approach to streamline the process by postponing the customization of office paper packaging materials. Feasibility analysis for the proposed concept was conducted within this thesis work. This analysis suggests that the digital printing concept could potentially be cost efficiently implemented to serve part of the ream wrap packaging material needs. Histogram analysis further suggests that the most favorable implementation locations for the concept would be the focal company Central European specialized converting department and Central European main converting department. This initial study further suggests a more comprehensive cost and benefit analysis to be conducted to fully analyze the potential of this postponement concept. This thesis work serves as an initial feasibility study for a packaging customization postponement approach. Although this study was conducted for a global office paper manufacturing company, the implications can be broadened to cover other industries involving packaging of the products under several brand names. Especially, in cases where the custom packaging is the product defining factor, there can be benefits, such as lower SKU levels and easier forecasting of demand, obtained with different postponement strategies. Additionally, there is analogy with industrial digital printing and 3D printing approaches, whereas the idea of localized production/customization can become available to wider variety of industry players when the costs of local manufacturing approaches decrease.

Paperiteollisuus on perinteisesti keskittynyt toiminnassaan tehokkuuteen ja skaalaetujen saavuttamiseen. Paperin valmistusta voidaan pitää erittäin pääomavaltaisena teollisuutena, joka osaltaan ohjaa asettamaan tehokkuuden etusijalle tuotantoprosesseissa. Tiukentuvat markkinanäkymät sekä aiempaa vaativampi asiakaskunta luovat kuitenkin painetta muokkaamaan prosesseja joustavimmiksi. Nykytilanteessa nopeat toimitusajat, joustavuus sekä tuotteiden räätälöintikyky muodostavat yhä suuremman osan kilpailukyvystä. Näiden arvolupausten soveltaminen käytäntöön saattaa kuitenkin johtaa lisääntyneeseen monimutkaisuuteen toimitusketjussa. Näin ollen ketterän toimitusketjun hallinnassa tulisi kiinnittää enemmän huomiota monimutkaisuuden hallintaan. Tämä diplomityö tutkii monimutkaisuuden lähteitä kohdeyrityksen toimistopaperitoimitusketjussa. Tapaustutkimuksen löydökset olivat, että tuotekirjon laajuus, sekä monimutkaiset prosessit personoitujen pakkausmateriaalien hankinnassa olivat pääasiallisia monimutkaisuuden lähteitä. Tämä diplomityö ehdottaa tunnistettujen monimutkaisuuden lähteiden hallintaan, sekä prosessien johdonmukaistamiseen kirjallisuudessa tunnistettua viivästyttämisstrategiaa (postponement). Toimintamallin ideana on viivästyttää toimistopaperituotteiden kustomointioperaatiota mahdollisimman lähelle tuotantoa, implementoimalla tuotepakkausten painatus digipainomenetelmällä joko tuotantolaitokselle, tai sen läheisyyteen. Tämä työ tutkii toimintamallin soveltuvuutta kohdeyrityksen toimitusketjuun kolmella eri toimipaikalla. Tulosten perusteella toimintamalli soveltuisi parhaiten kohdeyrityksen Keski-Euroopan tuotantolaitoksille.
