Cost optimised demand response strategies with air-conditioning in office buildings

Abstract

Demand response is an important feature of a smart energy system which consists of smart electric and thermal grids. The main principle of the demand response is to modify power usage in consumer level to enhance energy efficiency, reliability and to reduce environmental impact on a local energy system. Demand response also provides economical welfare when the peak power consumption is reduced and the need for expensive power production methods is reduced.

The objective of this research was to create optimal demand response strategies for air-conditioning from the perspective of a building owner. A modern office building is used as a case example. The potential of monetary savings, power reductions and energy savings were studied. Three different demand response strategies were developed for this purpose. They were either implemented according to 100 % accurate weather forecast together with day-ahead Spot-prices, day-ahead Spot-prices alone or according to measured weather data. The latter implementation focuses on peak power minimisation and the other two on maximising energy cost savings by two hours of daily power reductions. The demand response strategies are based on reductions in fan power of the air handling units of the case building, room set-point-temperature adjustments and on utilising the thermal mass of the building. The theory regarding the strategies is explained in this thesis and the performance of the strategies is studied by performing dynamic simulations with the IDA In-door Climate and Energy (IDA-ICE, version 4.7) software.

The results of the study demonstrate that the peak power minimisation strategy has the highest monetary saving potential. According to the simulations, the peak power demand of electricity and district heating can be reduced by 22 % and 23 % respectively, which provides approximately 5600 € annual monetary savings and a possibility of saving 31 300 € in investments. The original class of an excellent indoor climate can be maintained regard-less of the power reductions. Annual energy saving potential is approximately 1.7 %, respectively. The highest hourly power reduction potential is achieved with the strategies maximising the energy cost savings. The power reduction of electricity and district heating varies between 25-76 kW and 0-334 kW respectively, depending on the timing of the demand response and on the ambient air temperature. The annual monetary savings are around 2200 € while annual energy savings are approximately 4.7 % and 5.0 %. The latter is achieved with the strategy taking weather forecast into account. The original classification of indoor climate is decreased to a lower level by using these strategies.

Kysyntäjousto on tärkeä osa älykästä energiajärjestelmää, joka koostuu sekä sähkö- että lämpöverkosta. Kysyntäjouston pääperiaate on muokata sähkön käyttöä kuluttajatasolla, jotta paikallisen energiajärjestelmän energiatehokkuutta, luotettavuutta ja ympäristöystävällisyyttä voidaan parantaa. Kysyntäjousto tarjoaa myös taloudellista hyvinvointia, sen huipputehoja leikkaavan vaikutuksen ansiosta, jolloin kalliiden energiatuotantomuotojen käyttö vähenee.

Työn tavoitteena oli luoda optimaalisia kysyntäjoustostrategioita kiinteistön omistajan näkökulmasta, hyödyntäen rakennuksen ilmastointia. Esimerkkikohteena toimi moderni toimistorakennus, jonka potentiaalisuutta rahallisiin säästöihin, tehonpudotuksiin ja energiasäästöihin tutkittiin. Tätä tarkoitusta varten kehitettiin kolme erilaista kysyntäjoustostrategiaa, jotka toimivat joko 100 % tarkan sääennustuksen sekä Spot-hintojen, yksinään Spot-hintojen tai mitatun säädatan perusteella. Viimeksi mainittu strategia keskittyy huipputehon minimointiin, kun taas kaksi edellistä energiasäästöjen maksimointiin. Energiasäästöt maksimoitiin vähentämällä tehonkulutusta päivittäin, kahden tunnin verran. Kysyntäjoustostrategiat perustuvat puhallintehojen pudotuksiin rakennuksen ilmanvaihtokoneissa, huoneiden lämpötila-asetusten säätöön sekä rakennuksen termisen massan hyödyntämiseen. Strategioiden taustateoria on selitetty tässä työssä ja niiden käyttäytymistä tutkittiin hyödyntäen dynaamista simulointi ohjelmaa nimeltä IDA Indoor Climate and Energy (IDA-ICE, versio 4.7).

Työn tulokset osoittavat, että huipputehoa minimoivalla strategialla on suurin rahallinen säästöpotentiaali. Simulointien perusteella huipputehoa voidaan vähentää 22 % sähkön osalta ja 23 % kaukolämmön osalta. Näillä saavutetaan noin 5600 € vuotuiset säästöt sekä mahdollisuus säästää 31 300 € investoinneissa. Alkuperäinen, erinomainen sisäilmastoluokitus kyetään säilyttämään tehonpudotuksista huolimatta. Vuotuinen energian säästöpotentiaali on puolestaan noin 1.7 %. Suurimmat yksittäiset tehonpudotukset saadaan aikaan strategioilla, jotka tähtäävät energiakustannussäästöjen maksimointiin. Tehon pudotukset vaihtelevat 25-76 kW sähkön osalta ja 0-334 kW kaukolämmön osalta, riippuen kysyntäjouston ajoituksesta ja ulkoilman lämpötilasta. Vuotuiset säästöt ovat noin 2200 €, kun taas energiasäästöt ovat noin 4.7 % ja 5.0 %. Viimeksi mainittu säästö saavutetaan strategialla, joka ottaa sääennustuksen huomioon. Alkuperäinen sisäilmastoluoki-tus laskee alemmalle tasolle, näitä strategioita käytettäessä.
