Designing a business intelligence system for operational performance indicators

Abstract

Increasing competition and a strategy towards a world class factory increases the demand for monitoring factory’s performance in ABB Protection and Connection unit in Vaasa. The purpose of this thesis is to design a concept, a pilot version of the concept and an implementation plan of a Business Intelligence system.

The concept of a Business Intelligence (BI) system in this thesis includes four key areas: a definition of the performance indicators intended to be monitored in the future, functional specification of a data collection system, design of the architecture of the BI system, and design of the visualisation structure of the BI system.

Design thinking approach was used to understand the factory’s needs and to create solutions and prototypes for the future BI system. The research included working in the factory, interviewing managers and executives, literature review, and two benchmark visits to other factories.

This thesis defines new indicators for measuring Overall Equipment Effectiveness, throughput times and production downtimes. I addition, improvements to currently used indicators such as on time delivery and productivity are suggested. The functional specification of a new data collection system for the manual production lines is created to collect the data for the defined indicators. The data collection system includes tablets and RFID-technology to collect data reliably and efficiently. For being able to monitor the operations in real time, ABB’s AbilityTM platform is suggested to be used as a core for the BI architecture. AbilityTM platform is chosen out of two other options, because of its scalability, security, and its capacity to address the factory’s needs. AbilityTM platform is also used for implementing the designed visualisation structure. The visualisation tool of the platform performs seamlessly with the database provided, which makes it the most viable option. The visualisation tool addresses all the functionalities (alarms, drilling to detailed data, and support for different screen types) that are needed in the factory.

Kiristynyt kilpailu ja tehtaan strategiset tavoitteet lisäävät tarvetta monitoroida tehtaan suorituskykyä ABB:n Protection and Connection -yksikössä Vaasassa. Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena on luoda konsepti, pilottiratkaisu sekä käyttöönottosuunnitelma Business Intelligence -järjestelmästä, jolla voidaan monitoroida tehtaan suorituskykyä reaaliaikaisesti ja luotettavasti.

Tämän diplomityön Business Intelligence (BI) -konseptissa on neljä suunnitteluvaihetta: suorituskykymittarien määrittely, datankeräysjärjestelmän toiminnallinen määrittely, arkkitehtuurin suunnittelu sekä datan visualisoinnin suunnittelu.

Tutkimuksessa on käytetty suunnitteluajattelua, jotta saadaan tarkka ymmärrys tehtaan tarpeista ja ongelmista. Suunnitteluajattelua on myös käytetty prototyyppien ja ratkaisujen luonnissa. Tutkimuksessa tehtiin töitä tuotantolinjalla, haastateltiin tehtaan johtajia sekä suoritettiin vertailuanalyyseja kahdesta muusta tehtaasta.

Työssä määritellään uudet mittarit läpäisyajan, tehokkuuden sekä tuotantolinjojen käytettävyyden mittaamiseen. Työssä esitetään myös parannusehdotuksia nykyisille suorituskykymittareille (toimitusvarmuus ja tuottavuus). Mittarien määrittelyjen lisäksi työ esittää datankeräysjärjestelmän toiminnallisen määrittelyn. Datankeräysjärjestelmä pitää sisällään tabletteja ja RFID-teknologiaa, jolloin datan keräys on mahdollisimman luotettavaa ja tehokasta. Jotta operaatioiden suorituskykyä voidaan seurata reaaliajassa, AbilityTM -alustaa käytetään BI-järjestelmän runkona. AbilityTM -alustaa käytetään myös datan visualisoimiseen, koska visualisointityökalun ja tietokannan välinen integraatio on poikkeuksellisen sujuva. Visualisointityökalu vastaa myös kaikkiin toiminnallisiin tarpeisiin ja vaatimuksiin (hälytykset, yksityiskohtaisen datan esittäminen sekä erilaisten näyttötyyppien tukeminen), joita huomattiin tutkimuksessa.
