Abstract
The enormous growth of the Internet in the 21st century has led to user behavior changes, emergence of new Web application technologies and adaption of mobile first design. People have begun to favor mobile phones instead of desktop computers in connecting to the Internet. New Web application technologies such as frameworks and libraries have been developed to meet the needs of modern Web applications that work on multiple devices. In order to keep up with the latest technology trends, ABB has decided to upgrade its old drive selection tool to a completely new Web application. This master's thesis researches and determines useful background information for the modern Web application. After technologies are determined the focus is on the challenge of proposing suitable modern technologies and architecture for a Web application. The most essential technologies such as Web application frameworks and programming languages are validated based on several different measurements. Thesis also pays attention to benchmarking and proposes solutions such as data validation service and scripts approach for better data management. The research shows that it is possible to build the modern drive selection tool using Microsoft's ASP.NET framework and Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform. The architecture is proposed to include at least Web API, Web application and SQL database. Furthermore, thesis identifies evidences that React and Angular 2 are valid alternative technologies for drive selection tool's Web application, and programming languages such as C\# and JavaScript are good choices. The thesis suggest to implement the drive selection tool using mobile first design in order to enable it for mobile and desktop users.

Internetin käytön valtava kasvu 2000-luvulla on johtanut käyttäjien käyttäytymisen muutoksiin, uusien web-sovelluksiin liittyvien teknologioiden syntymiseen ja “mobiili ensin”-suunnittelun hyödyntämiseen. Nykyään on tavallisempaa ottaa yhteyttä Internetiin matkapuhelimella kuin pöytätietokoneella. Uudet web-sovellusteknologiat, kuten sovelluskehykset ja -kirjastot, on suunniteltu vastaamaan modernien useilla alustoilla toimivien web-sovellusten tarpeita. Pysyäkseen uusimpien teknologiatrendien kehityksessä mukana ABB on päättänyt päivittää vanhan taajuusmuuttajan valintatyökalunsa kokonaan uuteen web-sovellukseen.
