Abstract
Diplomityössä perehdyttiin elinkaariarviointiin perustuvaan tuotteiden hiilijalanjälkilaskennan ja talousnäkökohtien arviointimetodologiaan. Työssä valittiin näiden näkökohtien analysointiin käytännön työkalu, CCaLC2, jonka käyttöä testattiin juoma- ja panimoteollisuuteen kuuluvassa pk-yrityksessä, Laitilan Wirvoitusjuomatehdas Oy:ssä. Arvioitavina olivat yrityksen kolme tuotetta ja viisi paketointivaihtoehtoa. Kirjallinen osa keskittyi käytetyn menetelmäkokonaisuuden ja toimintaympäristön esittelemiseen. Työn kokeellisessa osuudessa tutkittujen prosessien syötteiden ja yksikköprosessien tiedot koottiin CO2-ekvivalenttilukuina (CO2e), jotka kuvaavat eri kasvihuonekaasupäästöjen yhteismitallistettua ilmastovaikutusta 100 vuoden aikajänteellä. Näiden tietojen perusteella suoritettiin vaikutusarviointi yhden vaikutusluokan eli ilmastonmuutoksen osalta. Koottujen tietojen avulla määritettiin tuotteiden hiilijalanjälkitulokset. Tutkittujen tuotteiden hiilijalanjälkituloksiksi saatiin 427-891 kg CO2e per 1000 litraa juomaa.

In this thesis, a life cycle assessment methodology based on product carbon footprint calculations and economic aspects was examined. A practical tool, CCaLC2, was selected for performing the analysis of these aspects. The use of the tool was tested in a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) belonging to the beverage and brewing industry, Laitilan Wirvoitusjuomatehdas Ltd. The company’s three products and five different packaging options were evaluated. The literature survey focused on presenting the utilized methodological framework and the operating environment. In the experimental part of the thesis, input and unit process data of the investigated processes was gathered as CO2 equivalents (CO2e), which represent the commensurated global warming potential of different greenhouse gases on a 100-year time span. Based on the information an impact assessment was performed for a single impact category, climate change. Collected data was then used to determine the products’ carbon footprints. The carbon footprint results of the investigated products were between 427 and 891 kg CO2e per 1000 litres of drink. The results of the carbon footprint analysis suggest that the carbon footprint of the aluminium cans as a packaging alternative is significantly lower compared to the disposable glass bottles. Furthermore, the results suggest that the contribution of the packaging to the total carbon footprint varied between 30 to 55 percent depending on the evaluated packaging and product option. Similarly, the impact of the raw materials and additives varied between 20 to 63 percent and the impact of energy consumption from 1 to 21 percent. In the thesis it was observed that the examination of the economic aspects in conjunction with the carbon footprint assessment helped to illustrate benefits of carbon footprint evaluations to companies. However, accomplishing these assessments may be challenging for SMEs. Therefore, it would be recommendable that companies in similar industrial sectors would create the first product category-specific examples as joint projects in order ensure the reliability of the results and manage the costs and risks of the projects. In addition, creating the examples could help the combined use of life cycle and carbon footprint cost data to develop to be part of corporate culture.
