Abstract
Google Trends tarjoaa reaaliaikaista tietoa ihmisten verkkohauista Google-hakupalvelimen kautta vuodesta 2004 lähtien.

The most accurate information about the development of the Finnish housing market is based on official statistics released by Statistics Finland. The reports are published with a lag of months and the revised statistics aren’t available until several months after the transactions have occurred. Due to the fast development of technology real time information about the housing market is also available. Approximately 90 percent of the buyers and sellers in the housing market search for information from the internet to support their decision-making. Online search queries are in many ways unique and pure information about the behavior of the modern man. Google Trends provides information about the searches made through their server practically in real time and the data is available from 2004 onwards. This study investigates the possibility of utilizing Google search queries to nowcast the housing price index and transaction volume in the Finnish housing market. The impact of the search queries is estimated by adding the development of the “Home Financing” search category to a baseline model. Google search queries improved the adjusted R2 by 6,8 percent and decreased the MSE by 5,9 percent for the housing price index model. Adding the queries to the transaction volume model improved the R2 by 2,4 percent and decreased the MSE by 5,5 percent. Utilizing internet search queries can help revolutionize our understanding of the current situation and the near future.
