Abstract
The concept development phase is arguably the most important within the product development process. The design decisions made in conceptual design have a huge effect on later stages of the process. According to previous research, as much as 80 % of faults in products are due to improper planning and design in the early stages. It is estimated that around 75 % of manufacturing costs are committed during the conceptual design stage. Furthermore, the cost of implementing changes due to design flaws increases exponentially as the project progresses. Computer-aided tools support the detection of design flaws through visualization, digital testing and data management. The aim of the thesis is to answer the research question “How to use computer-aided tools in conceptual design?”. A literature review was conducted to gain theoretic knowledge on the concept development process, and available tools and methods. The literature review was then used as the basis for an interview study conducted to gain practical information on computer-aided tools and their use within conceptual design. Information from both the literature review and the interview study was then gathered and compared to create a guide for the use of computer-aided tools in conceptual design. The main findings of the studies regard digital modelling and testing. The approach to model-ling during conceptual design should be different than in detail design. While modelling concepts, the designer should be restricted as little as possible by the tools used. Creative freedom and speed are essential; therefore, the user of the tools shouldn’t give thought to design intent or details in early conceptualization. Furthermore, while design intent is important in detail design, it is still unknown in the beginning of a concept. Hence, parametric properties should be left out of the early models. Tools such as digital sculpting and flexible modelling that make manipulating models easier, should be used to speed up the modelling process. During concept development, in many cases the entire concept should be simulated. Simulations are used to verify that the concepts satisfy the product requirements, but can also be used to guide the design. From the interview study it was concluded that mechanism and structural simulations are the most important in concept development. The simulation soft-ware that are most suitable for concept testing are light simulation tools included in commercial CAD systems. The user can seamlessly jump between modelling and assembly to simulation tools, without the need to convert or transfer models.
