Estimating product costs in an early phase of a new product development project

Abstract

Product cost estimation is an important part of a new product development project. Obtaining an accurate product cost estimate in an early phase of a new product development project will help decision making of the project management. The exist-ing cost estimation literature provides no unambiguous solution how to obtain accurate early phase product cost estimates. The ABB Drives organization have also recognized a practical need for more accurate and efficient cost estimating at early stages of new product development projects.

The purpose of this thesis is to study the existing cost estimation literature and to increase understanding on product cost estimation in an early phase of a new product development project. Specifically, the thesis will build a parametric cost estimation tool to estimate the product costs of cabinet built drives, as a solution to a practical problem.

This thesis will cover the relevant existing cost estimation literature, and based on that this thesis will analyze the existing product cost data and build a parametric cost estimation tool. Basis for our analysis is the existing cost data of the previous products. The quantitative analysis of the thesis is supported by findings from the expert interviews regarding the project case studies chosen to be analyzed in this thesis.

Key findings of this thesis are that quantitative cost estimation methods, such as the parametric cost estimation tool provides applicable results. However, as the project cases analyzed in this thesis show us, the already existing cost data is often limited and the parametric model presented in the thesis can be only applied to new prod-ucts with similarities with the previous products. Thus, combining qualitative assessment with an analytically calculated cost estimate will often provide the best results.

Tuotekustannusarviot ovat tärkeä osa tuotekehitysprojekteja. Tarkat kustannusarviot uuden tuotekehitysprojektin alkuvaiheessa auttavat projektijohtoa päätöksenteossa. Olemassa oleva kustannusennustamista käsittelevä kirjallisuus ei tarjoa yksiselitteistä ratkaisua, kuinka tuotekustannuksia voidaan ennustaa tarkasti aikaisessa vaiheessa. ABB Drives organisaatio on myös tunnistanut käytännön tarpeen tarkemmalle ja tehokkaalle kustannusennustamiselle tuotekehitysprojektien alkuvaiheissa.

Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena on tutkia olemassa olevaa kustannusennustamista käsittelevää kirjallisuutta, sekä lisätä ymmärrystä tuotekustannusten ennustamisesta tuotekehitysprojektin varhaisessa vaiheessa. Erityisesti diplomityössä rakennetaan parametrinen kustannusennustamistyökalu kaapitettujen taajuusmuuttajien tuotekustannusten ennustamiseksi.

Diplomityössä käydään läpi oleellinen kirjallisuus ja siihen perustuen työ analysoi olemassa olevaa kustannusdataa, sekä luo parametrista ennustusmallia hyödyntävän kustannusennustustyökalun. Analyysin lähtökohtana työssä on olemassa oleva aiempien laitteiden kustannusdata. Kvantitatiivista analyysia tukevat osana työtä suoritettujen case-projekteja asiantuntijahaastatteluiden tulokset.

Työ osoittaa, että kvantitatiiviset arviointimenetelmät kuten parametrinen malli tarjoavat hyödynnettäviä tuloksia. Kuitenkin, kuten case-tutkimuksesta ilmenee, olemassa oleva kustannusdata on usein hyvin rajallista, sekä työssä esitetty parametrinen malli on sovellettavissa vain, jos uudet kehitettävät laitteet ovat samankaltaisia olemassa olevien laitteiden kanssa. Tästä syystä paras lopputulos saavutetaankin usein yhdistämällä kvalitatiivinen arvio sekä analyyttisesti laskettu kustannusarvio.
