Abstract
The global shipping industry has been facing stricter international and national emission regulations during the past decade. The changes in the regulatory environment and fluctuating fuel prices along with tight competition for the hearts and minds of passengers have affected also the cruising industry. To meet the demands set by regulators, customers, owners and operators of shipyards need to be able to provide cruise ships that provide the best possible commodities and experiences while being as energy efficient as possible. To accomplish this, new energy efficiency concepts need to be designed and assessed. A passenger ship's energy system contains numerous interconnected components and has to provide electricity, heat, steam and cooling for different consumers with varying needs. A new discrete-event simulation tool was developed by using Matlab and Simulink to understand how the energy system of a passenger ship operates. The goal was to create a tool that could be used for running many simulations quickly and easily. The energy system simulation model was included with four new energy efficiency concepts: using a dual pressure steam system with a steam turbine, two ways of utilising engine cooling water by using heat pumps and using engine cooling water for preheating potable water. The simulation tool was validated against real data. 25 different energy system configurations were simulated and their performances were compared using the simulation tool. The validation and the simulation case studies show that the use of the simulation tool enables comparing results from multiple simulations and gives insight about how the new concepts affect the performance of the overall system. The results can be used to further develop the simulation tool and new energy efficiency concepts.
