Abstract
Product cost estimation is an important element for any manufacturing enterprise, and this is true also for a virtual factory. A virtual factory does not own any production facilities of their own. Instead it manages its manufacturing network, identifying and allocating the required production resources based on the customer’s needs. Product cost estimation can be divided into qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative methods are based on similarities between products, while quantitative methods require a more thorough analysis of the details and features of an individual product. In general, quantitative methods are more suitable for a virtual factory, and especially feature-based methods. There are several established ways for conducting computer-aided product cost estimation. The main benefits compared to manual estimates are speed and consistency. Combi Works is a virtual factory with a need for an internal product cost estimation system. This is in order to be able to provide quotes to customers without being dependent on supplier partners providing prices. A CAD-centered feature-based product cost estimation system was set up for Combi Works using SolidWorks costing. The system was tested and the results were compared to manual estimates. The results were adequate, but in order to gain the full potential benefits the system has to be used with more products and refined over time.
