Abstract
Energy efficiency is a key element in transitioning towards a carbon neutral and sustainable world, and it has been promoted into the core of the energy strategy of the EU. With more and more complex and sophisticated systems, it is not enough to measure only single components and their operational energy efficiency anymore, but instead to optimize overall efficiency of whole systems. Meanwhile, buildings consume more than a third of all final energy in the EU, and energy systems of buildings are currently under strong interest and research. This thesis combines four perspectives of energy systems analysis: building energy models, black-box energy production models, dynamic process simulation and district-level primary energy and emissions analysis. While many of the perspectives are already widely studied, the combination provides a new tool with potential in novel and also future energy system analysis. The study concentrates on using the combination for a case study including a typical urban district with a district heating network in France. In practice, the study estimates the effects of five different building heating system enhancements in three case buildings both on building and district level. The enhancements are improved thermal insulation, heat recovery from exhaust air of ventilation, solar heat, ground source heat and replacement of air source heat pumps with a district heating connection. Economic analysis is excluded from the study. According to the case study results, thermal insulation can have a remarkable impact on heat energy losses in older buildings. Exhaust air heat recovery with a heat exchanger is optimal for buildings with good insulation and for locations in which the ambient temperature is typically slightly over the lower temperature limit of the recovery system operation. Solar heat works as an additional heat source in buildings that have a hot water storage tank, although, in general, the heat demand is limited during the time of the most optimal production conditions. Heat produced by ground or air source heat pumps seems to be more efficient than district heat from rather small centralized production plants since the energy efficiency of small plants is not very high. The performance of solar heat and heat pump heat strongly depend on the target temperature to which the heat is delivered. The overall efficiency of a local district heating network affects how single-building efficiency enhancements translate to district-level improvements: optimal operation strengthens building-level improvements to become district-level improvements.

Poistoilman lämmön talteenotto sopii parhaiten hyvin eristettyihin rakennuksiin alueilla, joilla ulkolämpötila on yleensä hieman talteenottojärjestelmän toiminnan lämpötila-alarajan yläpuolella. Aurinkolämpö toimii rakennuksissa, joissa on lämminvesivaraaja, vaikkakin parhaiden aurinkolämmön tuotanto-olosuhteiden aikaan lämmöntarve on rajallinen.
