Measurement method to characterize roll-up resistance in wood-free uncoated heavy grammage papers

Abstract

A roll-up is an unwanted phenomenon to take place on the paper surface mainly in the printing houses. Being a cigarette-roll like surface fracture, mainly in the woodfree uncoated heavy grammage (>200 g/m2) paper sheets, roll-ups create a very high risk to cause significant financial losses by damaging the printing machine and causing production time losses.

Currently, the roll-up resistance of paper is characterized by measuring internal bond strength (IBS) of the paper. However, it has been empirically experienced not to describe the real nature of the roll-up resistance, resulting in the fact that no reliable quality control method to characterize the roll-up resistance of the paper is used in the paper mills. Therefore, a new quality control method, tailored to characterize the roll-up resistance of the paper, is presented in this thesis work.

In the theoretical part of this work, the paper properties experienced and assumed to affect the roll-up resistance of paper, are discussed. In addition, the current measurement methods for measuring the internal bond strength of paper are presented.

The experimental part of the work concentrates on the new roll-up device. The tests with the new device concentrate on the accuracy and the reliability of the device as a quality control measurement as well as the roll-up resistance tests for test material. The effect of both the starch type used and the production technique on the roll-up resistance is tested with the new device. Also, the correlation of the specific paper properties, with the results of the roll-up resistance tests are presented.

The results of this work showed that the new roll-up test device can be used as a quality control method to characterize the roll-up resistance of wood-free uncoated heavy grammage (>200g/m2) papers. Producing heavy grammage paper sheets with multi-layer technique, using potato starch in the production and decreasing paper roughness were noticed to increase significantly the roll-up resistance of paper. However, the IBS values did not correlate with the roll-up resistance of the paper, unlike currently believed.

Roll-upin syntyminen paperin pinnalle printtitaloissa on ei-toivottu ilmiö. Tupakkarullan muotoisia roll-upeja syntyy pääasiassa raskaille (> 200 g/m2), päällystämättömille sellupapereille aiheuttaen suuren riskin merkittäviin taloudellisiin kustannuksiin painotaloissa vahingoittamalla painokonetta sekä aiheuttamalla tuotantoajan menetyksiä.

Tällä hetkellä paperin kykyä vastustaa roll-upien syntymistä kuvataan palstautumislujuudella (IBS), jonka on kuitenkin kokemuspohjaisesti todettu antavan väärän kuvan rollupien syntymisestä. Tämän vuoksi tässä työssä on kehitetty uusi mittamenetelmä, joka havainnoi suoraan paperin kykyä vastustaa roll-upien syntymistä.

Työn teoreettisessa osassa käsitellään tärkeimpiä paperin ominaisuuksia, joiden on todettu vaikuttavan paperin kykyyn vastustaa roll-upeja. Lisäksi esitellään nykyisin käytössä olevat palstautumislujuuden mittausmenetelmät, joita paperiteollisuudessa on yleisesti käytössä.

Työn kokeellinen osa keskittyy uuteen roll-up mittamenetelmään. Menetelmän tarkkuuden, luotettavuuden ja laadunvalvontamenetelmäksi soveltumisen lisäksi uudella mittamenetelmällä tehdään roll-up vastustuskyky–mittauksia koemateriaalille. Kokeet keskittyvät erilaisen pintatärkin käytön ja paperin valmistustekniikan tuomiin vaikutuksiin paperin kyvyssä vastustaa roll-upeja. Lisäksi työssä testataan kirjallisuusosassa käsitellyiden paperin ominaisuuksien vaikutukset roll-upien muodostumiseen.

Työn tulokset osoittivat, että uusi roll-up mittamenetelmä soveltuu laadunvalvontamittaukseksi paperitehtaille kuvaamaan raskaiden (>200 g/m2), päällystämättömien sellupapereiden kykyä vastustaa roll-upeja. Paperin valmistaminen monikerrospaperina, perunatärkin käyttö pintatärkkinä sekä paperin karheuden alentamisen huomattiin nostavan paperin kykyä vastustaa roll-upeja. Kuitenkin, tällä hetkellä käytössä olevalla palstautumislujuudella ei muodostunut korrelaatiota paperin kykyyn vastustaa roll-upeja.
