Abstract:Regional power transmission system planning is based on power system simulator calculations with a static worst case scenario. Durations of the worst case scenarios have been difficult to forecast and therefore thorough determining of the stress of electrical components has been imprecise. The electricity market models enable predicting of power production and loading in power systems and make possible the studying of hourly power flow changes. Thus far electricity market models have been used mainly in 400 kV power flow analysis as accuracy of the market models have been overly inaccurate for regional power grid planning. Regional power transmission system planning signifies mainly the planning of 110 kV transmission network on the 13 regions of the Finnish national power grid. Aim of this study is to evaluate whether the electricity market models can be utilized in regional power system planning. If conceivable, a method for utilizing market models shall be developed and its accuracy will be tested. In addition the regional network plan of Kainuu shall be calculated with the help of market models. The work succeeded in establishing a BID-market model method which can be used to predict the future power flows in regional power grids. The accuracy of the method was strongly dependent on the input data, and for instance selection of wind production series had a significant impact on the end results. The method was used to forecast the variation of loading in electrical components, especially in power transformers. The method gave an excellent perspective on the assessment of grid reinforcements in the case of Kainuu. The regional power grid plan of Kainuu was calculated with the steady state analysis of PSS/E up to year 2030 and the results were compared with the outcome of the market model method. Significant savings can be achieved in grid investments with the help of market model method. Hence it is recommended to take the method in use and further develop it for different applications. It is also advised to study the reliability of the method in different power system regions. In addition the market model method tool YALFCM is encouraged to be developed. This work was ordered by the Finnish transmission system operator Fingrid PLC. |
