Abstract
Lopputyössäni käsittelen intuitiivista luonnostelua, doodlausta. Doodlausmainen luonnos eroaa piirtämisestä. Piirustuksella tai piirroksella on aina odotettavissa oleva loppu, tavoite, johon pyritään. Doodlauksessa ei ole piirtämisen kaltaista ennalta asetettua lopputulosta, doodlaus on prosessi. Doodle siis on eräänlainen luonnos, epätarkka piirros kun henkilön huomio on suunnattu jonnekin muualle. Käsittelen luonnosmaista piirtelyä eli doodlausta ajattelun, muistamisen ja luomisen apuvälineenä. Työssäni kamppailevat tietoinen luonnostelu ja "aivoton" doodlaus. Esittelen työssäni taiteilijoita ja teoksia, joiden työssä doodlausmainen työskentely on ollut merkittävässä roolissa. Taitelijoiden lisäksi työssäni esittelen erilaisia tutkimuksia, joita on tehty doodlauksesta ja sen hyödyistä oppimiseen, muistamiseen ja mieleenpalauttamiseen liittyen. Luon katsauksen taidesuuntiin, joihin doodlaus voisi liittyä sekä esittelen doodlauksen mahdollisia lajitovereita tai siltä vaikuttavia ilmiöitä. Työni on tutkimusmatka ja sukellus doodlauksen maailmaan. Se on kuin pieni eläintarha johon on kokoontunut tuttuja kuvioita ja kummajaiskuvatuksia doodlaamisen maailmasta. Jostain alalajista on hamstattu paljon aineistoa, kun taas toiset ovat ehkä jääneet täysin käsittelemättä. Ehkä mielenkiintoisinta olisikin ollut tämä ulosrajattu materiaali, kuten paperille syntynyt doodlaus aivojen ajatustenvirrasta pois rajaamasta materiaalista. Doodlaaminen antaa mielelle mahdollisuuden vaellella ja kädelle tilaa piirtää aivojen signaalit paperille. Doodlaaminen on yhdenlaista kinesteettistä simulaatiota mielelle. Doodlatut luonnokset nousevat tiedottomasta. Milloin tämä tiedoton alitajuinen tekeminen muuttuu tietoiseksi? Raja on aika häilyvä. Olen miettinyt asiaa ja mielestäni jokaisessa luonnoksessa on mukana aina jotain tiedostamatonta. Lähestyn doodlaamista eri kulmista. Aloitan historiasta, miten doodlaus on ollut ihmisluonteessa mukana aina kivikaudelta nykypäivään. Miten doodlaus on näkynyt taiteessa. Itseäni eniten kiinnostava aihe on tutkimus miten doodlaaminen auttaa asioiden ymmärtämistä ja hahmottamista sekä miten doodlaus toimii apuvälineenä taiteen tekemisessä ja vapauttaa ajattelemaan. Loppuosassa käyn läpi muutamia doodlauksen kaltaisia sovelluksia. Työni on vain pieni johdatus doodlaamiseen, pintaraapaisu pienestä mutta kuitenkin melko laajalle versoavasta aiheesta.My masters thesis subject is intuitive drawing, "brainless doodling". I see a division between drawing and doodling. Drawing as an action has several concerns, the most important being that there is an expected end result or goal. Doodling has no such expectation. There is no evident goal, it is simply a process. Doodling hasn't been discussed very much in this context in Finnish literature. I wasn't able to find written publications over the subject in Finnish, despite web-content in different blogs. One challenging thing can be the term doodling. I searched for knowledge from various places. My sources were Finnish libraries and Internet. I used search words such as doodled sketch, drawing or a pattern, I also used, words: reflexion, botch, daub, notes, scribble, sketch, lick, blur. I tried to find knowledge on benefits of doodling. I found a lot of information how doodling or simple sketching can save you from a lot of trouble. I also found many instructions, how it is better to use a short time to make a fast sketch than doing the whole work ready and notice thing that need a change. I didn't find content which would contain information about doodling. In my theses there is a struggle between conscious, purposely done sketching and brainless doodling. Scientifically speaking, doodling is shown to be a form of unconscious stimulus that allows the mind to focus on the task at hand. This type of processing leads to a majority of information being ignored and discarded due to it being useless to the task at hand.I am interested in this discarded information. While a part of our minds deem this type of knowledge to be useless, our brain still records it. It is a part of our history and memory, percolating just beneath the surface of full consciousness, forever unseen and unidentifiable. This discarded information shows up during the act of doodling. Doodling gives a chance to thoughts to wander freely and an opportunity for hand to doodle these weird thoughts down to the paper. Doodling is one kind of kinestic simulation to feed your mind. Doodled drawings are spreading from subconscious. But when this subconscious thing comes to conscious? There is not a clear line. I have thought about it and I think every doodle contains something from the subconscious. Impulse from the brain guides the hand to wrong direction. Hand draws whatever. I approach the doodling subject from different angles. I start from history, how doodling has been with us from stoneage to nowadays, how doodling has played a role in art. The most interesting part for me is the studies how doodling gives a freedom for thought. How it has been discovered that doodling helps to think and understand things. And how doodling can work as an peculiar aid when making art. In the end of my theses I represent some examples how doodling is used in different contexts. My work is just a short introduction to doodling, a scratch from a small but quite widely spreading subject.Description
