Study and evaluation of pre-mixing technologies for reactive extrusion process

Abstract

Reactive extrusion is a process used for enhancing the properties of the polymer material. This can be achieved by branching and crosslinking polymer chains. The alteration can be made by inducing a reaction with free radicals from the initiator molecule, which will cause a number of reactions between the polymer chains and the modifier molecule. In order to control the reactions, and thereby the product quality, the system conditions and the concentrations of the initiator and the modifier in the polymer particles have to be controlled.

In the present study, theories of absorption and diffusion in polymer particles were examined and parameters affecting the absorption process evaluated. A molecular dynamic model, using the free-volume theory, was utilized to simulate the absorption process of the initiator and the modifier into the particles. The simulated values were then compared to experimental data to validate the model. A comparison between model results and experimental data showed an average deviation of less than 12 % in all simulated cases.

In addition to the absorption process, the wetting of polymer particles is an important factor for achieving a homogeneous polymer-reactant dispersion. Whilst theoretical models assume complete wetting of the particle surface, this is often not the case in reality. Wetting depends on the properties of the fluid and polymer particles, but it can be improved by optimizing the spraying and mixing systems.

Based on the simulation results and the literature survey, conclusions of the general effect of each of the system parameters affecting the absorption process were compiled. Using these results, three different design concepts were created and their costs estimated. No general solution for the design could be developed, but considering all the affecting parameters, tailored recommendations for different cases can be made.

Reaktiivisessa ekstruusioprosessissa muovin materialistisia ominaisuuksia parannetaan haaroittamalla tai silloittamalla polymeeriketjuja. Ketjujen muutokset saadaan aikaan reagoimalla initiaattorin (initiator) muodostama vapaa radikaali polymeerin ja säätöaineen (modifier) molekyylin kanssa. Vapaat radikaalit voivat reagoida polymeeriketjujen kanssa monella eri tavalla, joista vain osa on toivottuja. Jotta prosessia voitaisiin hallita ja haluttu tuote saavutettaisiin, prosessin olosuhteita ja initiaattorin sekä säätöaineen konsentraatiota pitää pystyä hallitsemaan.

Tässä työssä käsitellään absorptio- ja diffuusioteorioita polymeeripulverissa ja arvioidaan eri tekijöiden vaikutusta koko prosessiin. Initiaattorin ja säätöaineen molekyylien absorptiota polymeeriin simuloitiin dynaamisella molekyylidiffuusiomallilla, joka hyödyntää vapaan tilan (free-volume) teoriaa. Simuloituja tuloksia verrattiin mitattuihin, jotta mallin tarkkuus voitiin arvioida. Mallin keskimääräinen virhe suoritetuissa simuloinneissa oli alle 12 %.

Absorptioprosessin lisäksi kiinteiden polymeerien kostuminen on vaikuttava tekijä, kun yritetään saavuttaa reagoivien aineiden homogeeninen leviäminen. Teoreettiset mallit olettavat yleisesti kostumisen olevan täydellistä, mutta todellisuudessa tämä ei useinkaan pidä paikkaansa. Kostuminen riippuu ennen kaikkea fluidin ja kiinteän polymeerin ominaisuuksista, mutta sitä voidaan parantaa optimoimalla sekoitus- ja sumutusjärjestelmiä.

Kirjallisuustutkimukseen ja simuloituihin tuloksiin perustuen luotiin taulukko, jossa arvioidaan prosessin ominaisuuksien vaikutusta prosessin eri osiin. Näiden tulosten perusteella luotiin kolme eri prosessivaihtoehtoa ja niiden kustannukset arvioitiin. Yleispätevää ratkaisua esisekoitukseen ei pystytty saavuttamaan, mutta soveltamalla tietoa prosessin ominaisuuksista ja niiden vaikutuksista, räätälöity suositus voidaan muodostaa eri tapauksille.
