Reduction of costs and carbon dioxide emissions caused by the electricity consumption in one-family household

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to find out how lucrative demand response operations with household loads could be in Finland. This was evaluated through demand response simulations of selected household loads in spot and ancillary markets. As a result the amount of savings and carbon dioxide reductions that the demand response operations could bring was obtained.

In the thesis the Nordic electricity markets in which demand responding household loads could participate in is examined. In addition to the physical electricity markets, also the balancing power markets provided by the transmission system operator, Fingrid, are researched. Frequency containment reserves (FCR) were found especially lucrative, even though their market size is limited and the constraints for the reserves are strict. Thus the participation in the ancillary frequency markets was investigated using the real frequency data of the power system. Additionally, the thesis illustrates a model of how the aggregated participation in the frequency containment reserves can be performed with several relay controlled loads.

The most promising household loads able to perform demand response were found to be heating loads and electric vehicles. For the heating load simulations, the heating demands of three different types of houses were investigated with the help of simulation software called IDA Esbo. The space heating loads in passive houses were not seen to have demand response potential since the heating demand is very little throughout the year. However, the household water heating loads in passive houses can run demand response operations.

In the simulations, the selected loads were set participate in the electricity markets through load shifting. The results indicated that by controlling the household loads to operate during the night, one can obtain savings of up to half of those generated by load shifting according to the spot prices. The most lucrative market for demand response operations turned out to be the frequency containment reserves, where the yearly compensation was even higher than the cost of electric energy in some cases. No significant profit was gained in the balancing market, since the balance settlement caused by the load shifting overturned the benefits. The results indicated that with load shifting it was not possible to significantly reduce the carbon dioxide emissions caused by the electricity consumption. Yet the demand response operations can benefit households that produce solar electricity for it allows them to become less dependent on the electricity grid.

Diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää sähkönkulutuksen kysyntäjouston kannattavuus Suomen kotitalouksissa. Tätä arvioitiin simuloimalla valittujen kotitalouskuormien toimintaa spot-, säätösähkö ja taajuudensäätömarkkinoilla. Tulokseksi saatiin rahalliset säästöt sekä hiilidioksidipäästövähennykset, jotka voitaisiin saavuttaa kysyntäjoustoa hyödyntämällä. Lisäksi työssä esitellään agrekoitujen kuormien ohjaustapaa esittävä malli, jolla taajuussäätömarkkinoille osallistuminen onnistuisi.

Hyötyjen selvittämiseksi työssä tutkittiin pohjoismaisia sähkömarkkinoita, joihin kysyntäjousto pystyy osallistumaan. Sähkön fyysisten markkinoiden lisäksi tarkasteltiin järjestelmävastaavan, Fingridin, sähköjärjestelmää tasapainottavia reservimarkkinoita. Rahallisesti parhaat korvaukset havaittiin saatavan taajuussäätömarkkinoilta, joissa kuitenkin markkinoiden koko on melko rajattu sekä vaatimukset kuorman ohjattavuudesta ovat tiukimmat. Tämän johdosta työssä selvitettiin käyttäen kantaverkon oikeaa taajuusdataa, kuinka aktiivista taajuussäätömarkkinoille osallistuvan kuorman ohjaus on.

Lupaavimmiksi kysyntäjoustoon kykeneviksi kotitalouskuormiksi työssä löydettiin lämmitys- sekä sähköautojen latauskuormat. Lämmityskuormista työssä tutkittiin tarkemmin tilalämmitystä ja kotitalousveden lämmitystä sekä sähköllä että maalämmöllä. Simulointeja varten työssä luotiin IDA Esbo ohjelmiston avulla kolmen erityyppisen rakennuksen tunnittaiset lämmöntarpeet. Tuloksista huomattiin, ettei passiivitalon lämmitys tarjoa kysyntäjoustomahdollisuuksia pienen lämmöntarpeen johdosta, toisinkuin tämän hetken rakennusmääräysten mukaiset rakennukset. Kuitenkin passiivitalojen käyttövedenlämmitystä voidaan myös kysyntäjoustaa.

Valitut kuormat simuloitiin osallistumaan sähkömarkkinoille Matlab-ohjelmiston avulla. Tuloksista huomattiin, että ohjaamalla kuormat toimimaan öisin, saavutettiin noin puolet säästöistä, jotka saatiin käyttämällä kuormia halvimpien spot-hintojen mukaan. Kannattavinta kysyntäjousto oli taajuussäätömarkkinoilla, joissa korvaukset ylittivät jopa sähköenergian hinnan osalla kuormista. Säätösähkömarkkinoilla säästöjä ei saatu, sillä kuormansiirtojen aiheuttama tasepoikkeama kumosi sen hyödyt. Kuormansiirrolla ei kyetty myöskään vähentämään selkeästi sähkönkäytön aiheuttamia hiilidioksidipäästöjä. Kysyntäjouston kuitenkin nähtiin tuovan lisähyötyä aurinkosähkötuottajille, sillä sen ansiosta aurinkosähkötuottaja voi välttää verkkomaksuja.
