Abstract
Opinnäytetyö Aalto-yliopiston taiteiden ja suunnittelun korkeakoulun taideteollisen muotoilun maisterinkoulutusohjelmaan on kokeellista valaisin- suunnittelua. Suunnitteluprojektissa tutkittiin tuotesuunnit- teluprosessin kautta valaisinsuunnittelun problema- tiikkaa. Suunnittelussa valaisimessa perusosa, valonlähteen ympärille tuleva osa, on aina samanlainen.

This thesis publication presents an experi- mental lighting design as a final project for Aalto University’s School of Art, Design and Architecture’s Applied Art and Design Master Program. The written section is divided into three parts comprising the background theory, philosophy and finally the design process. The theory section explores the physical phenomena of visible light and the history of lighting design from the development of the first light bulb through to current lighting technologies. This sec- tion also describes the contemporary lighting design process from inspiration and ideation through to concept development, prototyping and incorporat- ing revisions through to the refinement of the final object, acknowledging the basic design principles for a good lighting device. The principles of home and office lighting are also discussed in this section to provide context to the design application. The second section examines the phi- losophy of the aesthetics of light and shadows, with strong references to Super Normal philosophy described by Jasper Morrison and Naoto Fukasawa. This section also explores the philosophy associated with collapsible products. The final section of the publication dem- onstrates the various iterative stages of the design process through the development of a lighting ob- ject. Firstly, the application of the design method is explained, supported by a presentation of the design process, using sketches and photographs. The design process was realised by using the traditional methods. Ideas and background material were col- lected first, followed by sketching and the explora- tory construction of early structural models. The early models were hand-crafted using paper, cardboard and tape initially then iteratively refined. Finally, after many mistakes and consideration, the first proto- types were constructed out of polypropylene plastic using a laser cutter. The publication describes the lighting object as comprising of a set of similar individual pieces. The individual pieces are joined together at the top with a metal ring and at the bottom with structural hooks that slide inside of each other which enable the collapsible construction. The lighting object has an inner structure that is always the same, however, the object’s outer edge can be varied for multiple design possibilities. The prototypes are presented in the publication along with some examples where the outer edge pattern has been altered to demonstrate the potential for multiple design variations. The early prototypes are presented in this document and the product is analysed by using Pirkko Anttila’s meth- ods, presented in her book Käsityön ja muotoilun teoreettiset perusteet. In the very last chapters of this publication, conclusions are drawn from the entire endeavour including a summary of what has been learned and what possibilities there might be in the future.
