Process design and techno-economic evaluation of carbon capture from biogenic sources

Abstract

Biogenic feedstocks are expected to present a sizable share of the future decarbonized energy system. Biogas and biomethane possess the largest growth potential, as they can be utilized in co-generation, fuel, or as replacement for natural gas. Carbon capture is considered one of the key technologies to achieve the goals set for the green transition from fossil-based to renewable energy production in the short term. In the longer term, carbon capture produces carbon-neutral or even carbon negative feedstock for the industry, as the biogenic carbon is utilized in value-adding products or stored.

As the bioenergy sector attracts increasingly more interest, further research on biogenic carbon capture is necessary to identify investment possibilities. This thesis assesses the technical and economic feasibility of carbon capture from direct biogas upgrading process and from a CHP operation with biogas feedstock. For both processes, amine scrubbing (AS) with monoethanolamine (MEA) was modelled as a benchmark technology and compared against high pressure water scrubbing (HPWS), a physical absorption technology. To support the study, the biogas and carbon capture operators and the current state of global markets were researched and discussed.

The technical performance of AS and HPWS was evaluated with Aspen Plus simulation software. The direct upgrading process flowsheet handled biogas with a volume of 500 Nm3/hr. The flue gas carbon capture was modeled based on flue gas emitted from a CHP incinerating 500 Nm3/hr of biogas. Both technologies were able to achieve the carbon capture efficiency requirement of 90% set. Furthermore, the CO2 and biomethane purity requirement of 95% was successfully reached.

The techno-economic feasibility was calculated based on Aspen Process Economic Analyser (APEA) results and secondary data from the literature. The key values of interest included CAPEX, OPEX, LCOE, LCOCC and CDCF. The HPWS process was found to effectively challenge the AS process in direct upgrading and carbon capture. The calculations predicted profitable investment opportunities for both technologies with payback times between three to seven years. In flue gas carbon capture, the AS process clearly outperformed the HPWS process. Depending on the revenue structure of CO2 produced, the AS process was calculated to create profits after 11-24 years. The HPWS process was found not to be profitable in flue gas carbon capture.

Bioenergian odotetaan olevan tärkeä osa energiasektorin vihreää siirtymää tulevien vuosikymmenten aikana. Suurimman kasvupotentiaalin luovat biokaasu ja biometaani, joita voi hyödyntää sähkön ja lämmön tuotannossa sekä polttoaineena tai maakaasun korvikkeena. Hiilidioksidin talteenotto vauhdittaa lyhyellä tähtäimellä siirtymää fossiilittomiin raaka-aineisiin ja energiantuotantoon. Pidemmällä aikavälillä hiilidioksidin talteenotto tuottaa hiilineutraalia tai jopa hiilinegatiivista raaka-ainetta teollisuudelle, kun biogeenisista lähteistä oleva hiilidioksidi valjastetaan käyttöön.

Bioenergiasektorin kasvaessa ja hiilidioksidin talteenoton yleistyessä teknologioiden tutkimus- ja markkinatilanteen identifioiminen on tärkeää, jotta sijoitusmahdollisuudet arvoketjussa on mahdollista löytää. Tämä diplomityö arvioi hiilidioksidin talteenoton teknis-taloudellisen kannattavuuden biometaanin valmistuksesta, sekä sähkön ja lämmön yhteistuotannosta. Molemmat prosessit mallinnettiin amiinipesulla käyttäen monoetanoliamiinia ja korkeapainevesipesulla. Amiinipesu on laajasti tutkittu ja käytetty menetelmä hiilidioksidin talteenotossa, kun taas ympäristöystävällisempää vesipesua käytetään etenkin pohjoismaissa biometaanin tuotannossa.

Prosessien tekninen suorituskyky arvioitiin Aspen Plus simulointityökalua käyttäen. Biokaasutuotannon volyymiksi valittiin 500 Nm3 tunnissa ja hiilidioksidin talteenotto suoritettiin biometaanin valmistuksesta ja yhteistuotantolaitokselta. Sekä amiini- että vesipesuteknologiat onnistuivat saavuttamaan tavoitellun 90% tehokkuuden hiilidioksidin talteenotossa sekä yli 95% biometaanin ja hiilidioksidin puhtauden.

Teknis-taloudellinen selvitys toteutettiin Aspen Plus ohjelmiston datan ja kirjallisuusselvityksen pohjalta. Keskeisiä tuloksia olivat investointi-, operointi- ja energiakustannukset, hiilidioksidin tuotantohinnat sekä diskontatut kassavirtalaskelmat. Korkeapainevesipesun todettiin haastavan amiinipesun tehokkaasti hiilidioksidin talteenotossa biometaanin tuotannosta. Selvityksen tulokset puolsivat takaisinmaksuaikaa kolmesta seitsemään vuoteen. Amiinipesu todettiin selvästi vesipesua tehokkaammaksi hiilidioksidin talteenottoprosessiksi yhteistuotantolaitoksella. Amiinipesun takaisinmaksuajaksi laskettiin tulomallista riippuen 11-24 vuotta, kun taas vesipesun todettiin olevan taloudellisesti kannattamaton sijoitus.
