Industrial knitwear production offers a multitude of variables to diversify fashion expressions while embracing sustainable design principles. Achieving these possibilities requires a holistic approach that considers the intricate relationships between design, technical data, material properties, and mechanical construction. These aspects are translated through a digital interface into a fully automated process, relying on the expertise of technicians to realize the desired design objectives.
The linear, hierarchical work process in commercial knitwear production, where the designer's role determines technical execution without a comprehensive understanding of the possibilities and constraints, has been criticized for limiting innovation and underutilizing creativity. This thesis argues that for commercial realities and sustainable benefits to be objectively valid, the roles of designer and technician should overlap and inform each other through craft, fostering a creative mindset through practical experience. Reflective reasoning throughout the process enables the practitioner to develop an advanced, embodied knowledge of the correlation between aesthetic decisions and the technical execution of textile creation, termed 'textile thinking'.
Conducted as a practice-led study through action research, this thesis explores a reconfigured work process model where the practitioner undertakes the hybrid role of a 'designer-technician'. This model transforms the traditional sequence focused on technical rationality into a creative solution space for subjective design expressions to be formed. The theoretical part of the study investigates the contrasting cognitive and practical approaches taken by designers and technicians toward their shared goal. The impact of merging artistic exploration driven by risk and technical rationality reliant on certainty into the hybrid role of a 'designer-technician' is analyzed in terms of its effect on creativity.
The focus of this thesis lies in the practical development process, allowing the designer's explorative nature to engage in rational problem finding and problem solving through exposure to the serendipitous potential of practical production. The process reveals valuable insights that advance knowledge acquisition and facilitate their application to a diverse range of products, which are depicted and described through physical results and technical data. The resulting collection explores sustainable design strategies, including mono-material and zero-waste construction methods, as well as reversible and multi-functional design expressions.
While acknowledging the theoretically evident positive implications of divergent thinking patterns for innovative product creation, the thesis raises questions about the optimal positioning of expertise possessed by a 'designer-technician'.
