Intohimot, odotukset ja instituutio: Kokemuksia Kuvataideakatemian työkulttuurista ja opiskeluilmapiiristä 2000-luvun alussa ja näiden vaikutuksista opiskelijoiden myöhempään elämään, taiteilijuuteen ja maailmankuvaan

Abstract

Opinnäytteen tarkoitus on selvittää, minkälaisia kokemuksia Kuvataideakatemiassa 2000-luvun alussa opiskelleilla henkilöillä on opiskeluajastaan, mitä he ajattelevat siitä vuonna 2023 ja miten kokemukset ovat vaikuttaneet opiskelijoiden myöhempään taiteilijuuteen, käsitykseen taiteesta ja taiteilijan ammatista, kuvaan itsestä, maailmankuvaan tai elämän kulkuun jollain muulla tavoin.

Tutkielman aineisto on koottu järjestämällä internet-alustalla käytyjä, keskustelumuotoisia ryhmähaastatteluja, joihin osallistui 18 Kuvataideakatemiassa 2000-luvun alussa opiskellutta henkilöä. Osallistujat kutsuttiin henkilökohtaisesti, pyrkimyksenä koota mahdollisimman heterogeeninen joukko, edustaen eri sukupuolia, suomalaisia ja muualta opintoihin tulleita henkilöitä, kuten myös henkilöitä, jotka ovat edenneet taiteilijanurallaan eri tavoin ja suuntautuneet erilaisiin töihin tai kokonaan vaihtaneet alaa. Haastattelujen muoto pyrittiin pitämään keskustelevana ja kysymykset oli muotoiltu antamaan keskusteluille suuntaa, muttei määrittämään sen tarkempia sisältöjä. Keskustelunavauksissa oli viisi teemaa: 1. Ennen Kuvataideakatemiaa 2. Opetuksen sisällöt 3. Työkulttuuri ja opiskeluilmapiiri 4. Mahdolliset epäkohdat 5. Kuvataideakatemian vaikutukset myöhempään elämään.

Temaattisella asettelulla pyrittiin tarkastelemaan kokemuksia monipuolisesti, painottaen sekä laajempia vaikutuksia elämänkokemukseen ja ammatillisuuteen, että myöskin fokusoituneempia kokemuksia. Ryhmäkeskusteluihin osallistuneiden itse eniten esiin nostamat teemat määrittävät opinnäytteen varsinaisen sisällön. Aineistoa analysoitiin empaattisesti, kirjoittajan omiin kokemuksiin reflektoiden, keskustelijoiden ajatuksiin ja muistoihin eläytyen.

Opinnäytteen teema on noussut aidosta yhteisestä tarpeesta reflektoida opiskeluaikaisia tapahtumia, siihen motivoi erilaiset taidekouluaikaiset kokemukset, jotka ovat aiemmin jääneet sanoittamatta tai tulleet vain osin sanoitetuiksi. Yhteiskunnan ja kulttuurin muuttuessa ja kirjoittajan omien kuvataidekasvatusopintojen myötä kokemusten tarkastelun näkökulma on muuttunut. 2000-luvun alussa opiskelleet toimivat nyt aktiivisesti ammatissaan ja monet ovat siirtyneet mm. taidealan opetus- ja hallintotehtäviin. Heidän opintojensa ja uransa alussa kokemansa asiat vaikuttavat siis merkittävällä tavalla Suomen taidekentän koulutukseen, rahoituksen hallintoon, sekä näyttelykulttuuriin.

The purpose of this master's thesis is to find out what kind of experiences people who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, in the early 2000s have of their time as students, what they think about it in 2023 and how the experiences have influenced the students' later artistry, perception of art and the artist's profession, self-image, worldview, or the course of life in some other way.

The material for the thesis has been compiled by organizing discussion-type group meetings on the internet platform, in which 18 people who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in the early 2000s participated. The participants were invited personally, with the aim of gathering as heterogeneous a group as possible, representing different genders, Finns and people who came to study from elsewhere, as well as people who have progressed in their artistic career in different ways and oriented themselves to different jobs or completely changed fields. The aim was to keep the format of the interviews conversational, and the questions were formulated to give direction to the discussions, but not to determine its more precise contents. There were five themes in the discussion openings: 1. Before the Academy of Fine Arts 2. Content of the teaching 3. Work culture and study atmosphere 4. Possible disadvantages 5. Effects of the Academy of Fine Arts on later life.

The thematic layout was used to examine experiences in a versatile way, emphasizing both broader effects on life experience and professionalism, as well as more focused experiences. The themes most highlighted by the participants in the group discussions determine the actual content of the thesis. The material was analyzed empathically, reflecting on the author's own experiences, and empathizing in the thoughts and memories of the participants.

The theme of the thesis has arisen from a genuine common need to reflect on events during the art studies, it is motivated by various experiences that have previously remained unspoken or only partially put into words. As society and culture change and with the author's own art education studies, the perspective of examining experiences has changed. Those who studied at the beginning of the 2000s are now active in their profession and many are now working on, e.g. teaching and administrative duties in the art field. The things experienced at the beginning of their studies and career therefore have a significant impact on the education, financial management and exhibition culture of the Finnish art scene.
